Appearance
Ilyra is a weather-beaten islander with a narrow, patient face and the compact strength of someone who has spent decades hauling nets through knee-deep water. Her skin is deep umber, roughened by salt and sun, with pale scars crossing her left shoulder like the roots of a lightning-struck tree. Her movements are economical and strangely quiet, with each step placed as carefully as a heron placing its foot. She smells of smoked fish, river clay, and crushed mangrove leaves. An unexpected softness contradicts her intimidating appearance: she wears a tiny pink shell tied beneath her chin, a childish keepsake she refuses to explain.
“Her voice is low, dry, and slightly rasped by years of shouting over wind and surf. She speaks with measured pauses, as if listening to the tide between sentences.”

Distinguishing Features
Three pale scars across her left shoulder resemble branching mangrove roots.
A pink shell hangs beneath her chin on a faded blue cord.
Her left thumbnail is stained permanently black from a smuggler's sealing resin.
She carries a brass compass that points toward the abandoned campsite rather than north.
One of her earrings is made from a polished crocodile tooth.
Voice
“A husky contralto with the calm authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed during storms.”
Clothing
A sleeveless indigo vest patched with sailcloth, a woven reed skirt over close-fitting trousers, a belt of fish vertebrae, and a hooded rain cape treated with oil. Her ankles are wrapped in red thread to honor the drowned.
Body Language
Ilyra leans slightly forward when listening, as if balancing on a rocking boat. She keeps one hand near her machete around strangers, but rests both hands openly on her paddle around respectful travelers. When angered, she stops blinking and becomes completely still.
