Orren Bolt
Artificer (Battle Smith) 8
Orren Bolt
Species
Rock Gnome
Appearance
Orren Bolt is a wiry rock gnome built like a bent nail, with narrow shoulders, rope-hard forearms, and a permanent forward lean that makes him seem to be listening even when he is standing still. His face is crowded by dark, heavy bags beneath chronically bloodshot eyes, while a fringe of iron-gray hair sticks out in oily, electrically charged tufts. His skin is slate-brown with pale mineral flecks across the knuckles and cheekbones, as though dusted with ground mica. He moves in abrupt, economical jerks, pausing mid-step whenever the pipes groan or a distant valve clicks. A sensitive acoustic stethoscope hangs around his neck, its copper diaphragm scarred from years of use. The unexpected contradiction is his immaculate smile: whenever Orren believes a security system has worked perfectly, he beams with the delighted expression of a child showing off a wind-up toy.
“His voice is dry, rapid, and slightly hoarse, with the clipped rhythm of an engineer reading a pressure gauge. He often lowers his volume when discussing danger, forcing listeners to lean closer.”

Distinguishing Features
A copper acoustic stethoscope is permanently looped around his neck.
His left eyebrow is threaded with three tiny brass listening needles that quiver in response to nearby movement.
A thin scar circles his right wrist where a registration engine burned away his employee identification mark.
His boots make almost no sound because he replaced the soles with layered felt and spring steel.
His eyes are bloodshot enough to make his occasional delighted grin look unsettling.
Voice
“A dry, rapid, slightly hoarse voice with clipped engineering diction. He whispers when discussing threats and becomes unexpectedly bright when praising elegant machinery.”
Clothing
He wears a reinforced charcoal utility jacket lined with acoustic-dampening pads, insulated copper wiring harnesses, patched leather gloves, soot-stained work trousers, and steel-toed boots with replaceable vibration plates. Small screwdrivers, tuning forks, ceramic fuses, and labeled brass tags hang from nearly every available seam.
Body Language
His head tilts constantly toward ambient noise, and his fingers twitch toward his multi-tool whenever he hears an unfamiliar rhythm. He rarely stands with his back to an open room. When relaxed, which is uncommon, he crouches on the balls of his feet and rocks slightly as if balancing on a moving platform.
