Stitch-Nine
Species
Gearforged
Appearance
Stitch-Nine is a striking Gearforged assembled from civic machinery that was never meant to share a single body. Its heavy watchman's torso is polished brass, warm and reflective across the chest, but scarred by old impact dents that have been filled with dark blue solder. Below it sits a slender, matte-gray tax-collector's hip assembly, narrow enough to make the torso seem perpetually off-balance. One arm is long and delicate, ending in nine needle-fine fingers, while the other is a broad utility limb with a hinged inspection lamp built into the elbow. Its head resembles a municipal speaking-box fitted with three rotating optical arrays. It moves with graceful, economical precision, yet every turn of its hips produces a faint sequence of filing clicks. The unexpected contradiction is its face: severe, bureaucratic geometry softened by a tiny painted smile beneath the resonator grille, refreshed every morning in bright vermilion pigment. The impression it leaves is of a courthouse clock that learned compassion but never stopped keeping time.
“Its voice is preternaturally calm and melodiously modulated, with each sentence delivered at a measured tempo. It can make a threat sound like a helpful scheduling suggestion.”

Distinguishing Features
A vermilion painted smile beneath the resonator grille, renewed daily.
A mismatched utility arm with an elbow-mounted inspection lamp.
Nine small brass numerals engraved around the left optical array.
A rhythmic tremor in its multi-jointed fingers whenever the Brass Census is mentioned.
A thin line of blue solder running from the right shoulder to the center of its chest like a painted tear.
Voice
“A smooth alto-like mechanical resonance with gentle harmonic overtones, never hurried and rarely raised. When the Brass Census is mentioned, the voice remains calm while a faint metallic flutter distorts the final syllables.”
Clothing
A soot-gray broker's coat hangs from the brass torso by magnetic clasps and is lined with strips of red market canvas. It wears a high collar, a chain of obsolete civic tokens, a slate-gray sash for recording debts, and a battered half-cape stitched from rejected warehouse manifests.
Body Language
Stitch-Nine stands unnaturally still while listening, with its optical arrays turning independently toward each speaker. During negotiations, its slender fingers arrange loose bolts into neat rows. When frightened, the rows become jagged and the fingers tremble in a steady nine-beat rhythm.
