Appearance

Zohra bint-Boran is a broad-shouldered human woman whose strength shows less in bulk than in the tireless economy of her movements. She walks with the grounded balance of someone carrying a brimming pot across loose stone, never hurrying, never spilling. Silver threads run through her black hair like fine wire in a dark braid, and her weathered hands are permanently marked by tiny burns, flour cracks, and blue stains from water-recording ink. Her face is square and expressive, with a deep crease between her brows and a small scar cutting through her left eyebrow. She smells faintly of cardamom smoke, clean ash, and iron cistern water. The unexpected thing about her is her delicacy: when she handles bread, herbs, or a sleeping child, her fingers become astonishingly gentle, almost ceremonial.

Height5 feet 8 inches
BuildBroad-shouldered, powerfully built, and softened slightly by age without becoming slow.
EyesDark hazel with amber flecks, usually narrowed in practical assessment
HairBlack with extensive silver threading, worn in a thick braid
SkinWarm brown skin weathered by smoke, dry air, and years underground

Soft and measured when addressing the hungry, with a low, ringing authority when issuing instructions. She rarely raises her voice, because everyone in the Hall has learned that her quietest words are often the most serious.”

Distinguishing Features

A silver streak forms a crescent above her right temple.

Her left eyebrow is split by a thin white scar.

She wears a brass measuring cup on a cord around her neck.

Her fingertips are permanently darkened by soot and blue archival ink.

She can identify most Hall residents by the sound of their footsteps.

Voice

A low contralto softened by years of reassuring children and hardened by years of settling disputes. Her anger does not become louder. It becomes cleaner, more precise, and impossible to mistake.

Clothing

A soot-dark linen dress reinforced at the shoulders, a thick ochre apron sewn with hidden pockets, wrapped forearms, soft leather shoes, and a faded green scarf tied around her waist. Her apron carries a ring of labeled keys and a bone-handled kitchen knife.

Body Language

Zohra plants both feet before delivering difficult news, folds her hands over her apron when listening, and tilts her head slightly toward distant sounds. When angry, she becomes more still rather than more animated. When pleased, she nudges a bowl toward someone without looking at them.
