Valter Skjöldur
Fighter, Watch Captain
Valter Skjöldur
Species
Human
Appearance
Valter is a broad-shouldered, weathered man whose stillness is more noticeable than his size. He waits with his weight on the balls of his feet, as if every conversation might become a pursuit. His beard is clipped close except for a narrow braid beneath the chin, threaded with a dull brass ring. His hands are clean but permanently roughened around the knuckles from years of reins, winter iron, and prison doors. He smells faintly of boiled wool, juniper oil, and old paper, a scent he does not notice until someone steps close. The unexpected contradiction is his softness of movement: despite his heavy frame and military bearing, he walks almost silently, placing each foot as carefully as a thief.
“Low, careful, and almost conversational. Valter speaks in short clauses, leaves deliberate pauses before names, and rarely raises his volume.”

Distinguishing Features
A narrow brass ring hangs from the short braid beneath his chin.
He smells of juniper oil, boiled wool, and old paper, especially after rain.
He waits with his weight pitched forward, giving the impression that he is perpetually about to move.
His left thumb bears a small rectangular patch of ink that never fully washes away from years of marking arrest ledgers.
His voice remains calm even when issuing threats, which makes his anger feel more dangerous than shouting would.
Voice
“A low northern baritone with a dry rasp, like paper dragged across rough wood. He sounds most compassionate when discussing rules and most threatening when whispering.”
Clothing
A dark blue-gray watch coat reinforced with leather at the shoulders and forearms, a weather-stained wool cloak, high boots, a plain iron badge, and a red cord around his left wrist marking an old watch oath. He wears no visible ornament besides the brass ring in his beard.
Body Language
Valter stands with his weight forward, one hand resting near his cudgel but never gripping it. When someone lies, he tilts his head slightly and becomes unnaturally still. When ashamed, he rubs the brass ring in his beard braid with his thumb.
