Milo Silt-Root
Species
Forest Gnome
Appearance
Milo is a small, calm forest gnome with a broad, slightly stooped posture earned from decades spent inspecting roots and crawling through service hollows. His weathered skin has the soft texture of old leather softened by rain, with pale creases around his eyes and faint green staining along his knuckles from years of handling living conduits. His gentle green eyes seem perpetually focused on the soil beneath his boots, even while he is speaking to someone. His fingers are ink-stained, nicked, and permanently dark beneath the nails. He moves with patient, economical precision, placing each foot as if testing the stability of the ground. The unexpected contradiction is that his hands are rough and work-scarred, but his presence is almost unnervingly delicate, like a librarian who has wandered into a quarry. People often remember the faint smell of wet earth and crushed mint that follows him.
“His voice is quiet, dry, and deliberate, with the soft rasp of someone accustomed to speaking underground. He rarely raises his volume, but his words become startlingly forceful when defending workers or endangered communities.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale scar curves from his left ear to his jaw, caused by splintered rootglass during the Rotglass Collapse.
His ink-stained fingertips bear tiny green crescent marks from years of pressing coded symbols into wet soil.
The brass pruning shears at his belt are engraved with the names of workers who died maintaining the Directorate's conduits.
A thin white rootlike streak runs through his dark hair, created by prolonged exposure to unstable cleansing sap.
His reed hat contains a hidden inner lining marked with a cipher only visible when held over steam.
Voice
“A low, papery murmur with a patient rhythm, like water filtering through roots. His rare moments of anger do not become louder, but each word lands with clipped finality.”
Clothing
A heavy dirt-resistant canvas worker's tunic patched with green thread, reinforced trousers tucked into mud-dark boots, a wide-brimmed woven reed hat, fingerless gloves, and a sturdy leather belt hung with brass pruning shears, a soil-testing kit, root-sealing wax, and a thick leather-bound maintenance ledger filled with meticulously drawn botanical diagrams.
Body Language
Milo keeps his shoulders rounded and his hands folded over his ledger, giving the impression of harmless concentration. His eyes rarely meet another person's gaze for long unless they are discussing injustice. When lying, he becomes perfectly still and taps one pruning shear against the ledger's spine in a slow, regular rhythm.
