Harlan McCraw
Warlock, Devils Justiciar
Harlan McCraw
Species
Halfling
Appearance
Harlan McCraw is a compact halfling with the dense, practical build of someone who has spent his life hauling locked cases through back alleys. His skin is weathered bronze, roughened across the knuckles and forearms by salt air, cheap leather, and years of handling objects that should not be touched barehanded. His sandy-brown hair falls in soft waves to his jaw, always slightly damp at the temples even in dry weather. His eyes are warm hazel and perpetually amused, but his breathing changes when he is frightened: it becomes shallow, measured, and almost noiseless, as if he is trying not to alert an unseen creditor. He moves with a rolling dockside gait that abruptly becomes perfectly still whenever someone lies. The unexpected contradiction is that his hands are exceptionally gentle. He handles cursed relics like sleeping infants, yet treats ordinary coins with sharp, suspicious impatience.
“A warm canal-district baritone with careful diction, soft rolled r sounds, and a habit of lowering his voice at the end of a sentence as if making the listener lean closer. Under stress, the merchant's rhythm disappears and his words become clipped, practical, and frighteningly sincere.”

Distinguishing Features
His fingertips are permanently stained dark blue by curse-dissolving ink.
A faint scent of singed cinnamon follows him, strongest when he is lying.
His lower lip bears a tiny brass stud engraved with an unreadable legal symbol.
He breathes almost silently while frightened, then releases one long audible breath when danger passes.
He wears a child-sized red mitten tied to his belt, though he refuses to explain why.
Voice
“Low, cordial, and faintly breathy, with the polished warmth of a shopkeeper who has learned to make threats sound like customer service. When rattled, his voice drops into a nearly inaudible whisper before snapping back into crisp, ordinary speech.”
Clothing
A bottle-green waistcoat over a cream shirt with unusually long cuffs, a charcoal traveling coat lined with red thread, soft leather boots, and a belt of small brass cases. His pockets contain chalk, sealing wax, salt, lemon drops, and folded contracts.
Body Language
Harlan keeps his elbows tucked close and his hands visible, palms often resting over the brass clasp of his ledger. He leans toward people when they speak but leans away the instant they make an oath. When angered, he stops blinking and begins silently counting the seams in his gloves.
