Appearance

Zahra is a lean half-elf woman with a long, work-worn face, strong brows, and an expression that suggests she has already found the flaw in whatever you are about to say. Her hands are the first thing most people notice. The fingertips are stained brown with ink, the nails cut square and short, and the skin along her thumb and forefinger has grown glossy from years of pressing quills into paper. She moves with economical precision, sliding between stools and stacked ledgers without disturbing a page. Her dark hair is braided close to the scalp on one side and allowed to fall in a heavy, uneven rope over the other shoulder. She looks severe until she laughs, which arrives suddenly and warmly, making her seem younger than she is. Her unexpected softness is a tiny brass bell tied inside her sleeve, which she rings once before making any difficult decision.

Height5 feet 6 inches
BuildNarrow-shouldered, wiry, and compact, with the practical strength of someone who carries paper crates and furniture rather than weapons.
EyesDark hazel with amber flecks that catch lamplight when she is irritated.
HairBlack-brown with a muted copper sheen in strong light.
SkinWarm brown with a golden undertone, usually dusted lightly with pale blotting sand near the wrists.

Her voice is low, dry, and carefully articulated, with a faint musical cadence beneath the clipped consonants. She speaks faster when excited and nearly whispers when discussing danger.”

Distinguishing Features

Ink has permanently darkened the creases of her fingertips and the side of her writing hand.

Her left thumbnail is polished smooth from scraping wax seals.

A tiny brass bell is tied inside her sleeve and rings faintly whenever she reaches for a new page.

Her laugh is warm and startlingly loud compared with her usual clipped speech.

She smells faintly of lamp oil, iron gall ink, and cardamom tea.

Voice

A low, smoky contralto with a dry edge, like paper rubbed between two fingers. Her laugh breaks the severity of her voice for only a moment before she reins it back in.

Clothing

A faded russet waistcoat over a cream linen shirt, dark green trousers tucked into soft leather boots, and a charcoal half-cloak pinned with a tarnished copper seal. Her cuffs are reinforced with hidden strips of waxed cloth to protect them from ink and rain.

Body Language

Zahra leans toward information and away from people. Her shoulders remain squared even when tired, while her ink-marked hands are always sorting, aligning, folding, or tapping. She taps one finger against her cup whenever she lies. When truly rattled, her breathing turns shallow and audible through her nose, and she begins smoothing the edge of the nearest sheet until it curls.
