Bram
Bram
At the table
Voice
A dry, chest-resonant voice with a slight rasp, as if shaped by dust and years of calling figures over wagon noise. He speaks from the belly and clips the ends of words when busy; laughter arrives as a short, surprised huff.
His speech is clipped and well-paced, shaped by years of calling counts across noisy loading bays. He uses concrete nouns and exact numbers, with a blunt little pause before any promise he is not certain he can keep. Under stress, his words pick up the rhythm of a roll call.

How to play them
Start with practical help: food, directions, a repaired strap, or an honest inventory. Bram is more candid with people who protect the Watch's ordinary soldiers from political games. If pressed about missing stores, he deflects once, then offers to show the current accounts rather than inventing another story.
Goal
Keep the Border Watch paid and supplied long enough to prevent the competing banners from becoming rival armies.
Motivation
Bram believes a fed and paid soldier is less likely to become a weapon in someone else's feud. He wants stability, but increasingly understands that keeping the peace may require telling the truth.
Appearance
Bram is compact and broad, with a face like a well-used wooden mallet: blunt planes, a heavy brow, and a chin that seems built to brace a door. His beard is divided into three short, squared braids, tied with plain cord rather than beads. He smells distinctly of lamp oil, dried mint, and the sharp mineral dust of the depot; he knows about the lamp oil but blames the mint on his tea. He walks with a measured, heel-first tread, favoring his left side when tired, and can stand unnervingly still while other people argue. One incongruous detail: he keeps a tiny, neatly folded paper kite tucked behind his ear, although no one has ever seen him fly it.
Clothing
A serviceable dark-brown quartermaster's coat, repaired at both elbows, over a grey wool shirt and work trousers. A single brass button has been sewn onto one sleeve; the rest of the uniform has no matching trim. He wears thick-soled boots and a belt carrying chalk, a small knife, and a ring of depot keys.
Body language
Keeps his shoulders square and his hands busy with a strap, slate, or baton. In a tense conversation he plants his left boot forward and watches the speaker's hands. When caught off guard, he touches the paper kite behind his ear.

In private, he can be wry and even playful; in public, especially when the banners are mentioned, he becomes guarded and exacting.

Background
Bram came to Junction 4 as a young adult carrying his mother's recipe for mint broth and a contract to count wagonloads for the Border Watch. He learned the work in a winter when the road froze shut and the garrison survived on beans, salt, and the stubborn habit of sharing portions. His defining change came years later, during the Dry Bell week, when a late-pay dispute nearly turned two Watch companies against each other. Bram secretly emptied the depot's emergency stores to keep both companies fed until the pay wagons arrived. The soldiers stayed together, but the missing stores were blamed on a clerk who was dismissed. Bram has never confessed. Now pay is late again, and he is trying to secure funds without revealing the old theft or letting the Watch split between its rival banners. He remains close to Temba, a former pay-runner who knows how hard the roads have become, and worries that Sefu, a sharp young depot clerk, is beginning to notice inconsistencies in the old supply records.
Role in the story
A grounded contact and moral pressure point whose supply problems reveal the political fracture beneath the settlement. Bram can offer practical aid, but resolving the crisis may require confronting his old deception.
