Balthazar Pimm
Species
Halfling
Appearance
Balthazar Pimm is a small, soft-spoken halfling man with a perpetually damp brow and nervous eyes that flick from face to face as if every conversation were an audit. His thinning sandy hair is combed with desperate precision, but the heat of the garrison quickly raises one rebellious tuft above his left temple. His movements are quick without being graceful. He leans slightly to his right under the weight of his oversized ledger satchel, walks with short, rapid steps, and checks every doorway as he passes it. His fingers are stained blue-black with inventory ink, though the nails are buffed clean. The contradictory impression is striking: he looks like a man on the verge of collapse, yet his clothing, papers, tools, and even sweat-wiping handkerchief are arranged with the exactness of a military parade.
“Soft, rapid, and carefully deferential. His sentences are crowded with qualifications, corrections, and apologetic pauses.”

Distinguishing Features
A single tuft of sandy hair perpetually springs upright no matter how carefully he combs it.
His fingers are permanently stained with layered blue-black inventory ink.
He walks with rapid, birdlike steps while leaning slightly to the right beneath his satchel.
His brass counting scales chime softly whenever he moves.
He smells faintly of dust, lamp oil, mint, and hot paper.
Voice
“A breathy, courteous tenor that sounds permanently close to apologizing. Under stress, it accelerates into a whispering stream of figures and contingencies.”
Clothing
A meticulously brushed but slightly ill-fitting quartermaster's tunic bearing the insignia of the badland garrison, reinforced trousers, soft-soled depot shoes, an oversized ledger satchel worn across his chest, polished brass counting scales on his belt, and a stack of clean handkerchiefs hidden in his sleeve.
Body Language
Balthazar constantly wipes his palms on the inside of his tunic, touches the brass scales at his belt to reassure himself, and angles his body so that his satchel remains between himself and strangers. When frightened, he becomes very still except for one tapping thumb. When lying, he smiles too broadly and begins correcting irrelevant details.
