Appearance
Minka Sorel is a compact, weather-hardened woman with the dense, balanced posture of someone who has slept more often beneath wagons than beneath roofs. Her skin is wind-polished and freckled across the nose and hands, with fine white lines at the knuckles from years of rope burn and frozen cargo straps. She moves with unnerving economy, never quite turning her head when her eyes will do, and seems to measure every room by exits, carrying capacity, and the distance between people. Her most unexpected feature is her smile, broad and almost girlish, appearing whenever she is furious or about to deliver terrible news. She leaves the impression of a locked chest that has somehow learned compassion.
“Her voice is low, dry, and exact, with the clipped rhythm of a commander reading figures aloud. She rarely raises it.”

Distinguishing Features
A brass balance seal hangs from her belt and is constantly checked with her thumb.
Her fingers are permanently darkened by ink, axle grease, and powdered charcoal.
She smiles broadly when enraged, giving her the unsettling air of someone enjoying a private joke.
Tiny colored route-threads are sewn into the cuffs of her coat, each one representing a road she has personally kept open.
She carries a strip of dried apple in her mouth during difficult negotiations, chewing it with deliberate concentration.
Voice
“A low contralto with the dry rasp of gravel beneath wagon wheels. She sounds calm even while threatening someone, and grows almost warm when discussing food, road safety, or people who have done difficult work without recognition.”
Clothing
A dark blue wool officer's coat reinforced with leather panels and hidden pockets, weatherproof gray trousers, high-laced travel boots, and a sleeveless brass scale vest worn beneath the coat. Her cuffs are stitched with tiny colored threads representing the seven routes under her command. She wears a red scarf only in summer, claiming it helps her remember who is hoarding heat.
Body Language
Minka stands with her feet planted as though the floor might tilt. She checks the brass seal at her belt whenever someone lies, presses her thumb against the edge of her ledger when making a difficult decision, and leans closer to frightened people while leaning away from confident ones. In combat, she barely moves her shoulders, making each strike appear to begin from stillness.
