Orren Vane
Species
Human
Appearance
Orren is an elderly human man who looks as if a strong wind could fold him into a map. His shock of silver-white hair rises in stiff, untamed whorls, though several locks have been neatly tied with red cataloguing thread. Deep wrinkles gather around his constantly furrowed brow, and his ink-stained fingers tremble with a fine, ceaseless motion that makes every gesture resemble hurried handwriting. His faded blue eyes rarely focus on the person speaking to him. Instead, they seem fixed on a distant century just beyond the room. He moves with a slow, stooped shuffle until a magical disturbance occurs, at which point he becomes startlingly quick, gliding between shelves with the silent precision of a hunting heron. He smells of dust, lamp oil, bitter tea, and rain trapped inside old stone. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a frail, half-forgotten grandfather who somehow occupies every doorway before anyone else reaches it.
“His normal voice is dry, precise, and surprisingly soft, with the careful cadence of someone reading a legal deposition aloud. He pronounces names in their original languages whenever possible.”

Distinguishing Features
A thin vertical scar runs from his left temple to the corner of his mouth, glowing faintly whenever someone lies within earshot.
His right hand has six ink-darkened fingertips because an extra finger briefly grew there during a failed chronomantic experiment.
A brass catalogue tag is embedded beneath the skin of his throat and clicks softly when he swallows.
His shadow sometimes turns pages when he is standing still.
He wears spectacles with one clear lens and one lens made from translucent blue crystal that reflects rooms from several seconds in the future.
Voice
“A papery baritone worn thin by dust and sleepless nights, with a faint clicking undertone caused by the brass catalogue tag beneath his throat. When planar energy rises, a second voice sometimes repeats his final word half a second late.”
Clothing
Voluminous, dust-caked scholar's robes of faded charcoal and blue, lined with inner pockets overflowing with crumbling parchment scraps, folded maps, brass keys, charcoal sticks, and arcane transcripts. His sleeves are held back by leather cords to keep them away from wet ink. He wears soft, cracked boots, a high-collared waistcoat embroidered with tiny warding sigils, and a patched gray scarf whose underside is covered in microscopic notes.
Body Language
Orren keeps one hand pressed against his sternum as if steadying an internal compass. He tilts his head toward invisible sounds, taps his cane in prime numbers, and frequently turns away during emotional revelations so he can pretend to inspect a shelf. When lying, he becomes perfectly still. When telling the truth, his trembling becomes much worse.
