Pip Ember-Scrap
Rogue, Inquisitive
Pip Ember-Scrap
Species
Cinderclaw, Tunnel-Runner
Appearance
Pip Ember-Scrap is a compact cinderclaw with ochre scales powdered by years of road dust. His body is narrow and spring-loaded, built for squeezing between wagon axles and vanishing beneath market stalls. He moves with a peculiar sideways readiness, never quite standing squarely, his weight resting on the balls of his feet as if the ground might suddenly tilt. His scales rasp softly when he turns. A row of pale counting marks has been painted across his snout, one for every season he has served the High-Pass Watchers. The unexpected detail is his immaculate white claws, polished daily despite the ash, ink, and grease coating everything else about him.
“His voice is quick, dry, and breathy, with sibilant consonants that sharpen when he is excited. He speaks in compact reports, occasionally slipping into a low Swahili-like cadence when comforting frightened people or muttering to himself.”

Distinguishing Features
Pale painted counting marks run across his ochre snout.
His white claws are polished to a startling shine despite his ash-covered work.
He carries a brass magnifying lens on a chain and habitually holds it over people's hands while they speak.
His tail has a flattened tip from years of squeezing beneath wagons.
He leaves tiny square ink marks on documents whenever he notices a contradiction.
Voice
“A dry, whispering tenor with a faint rasp, as if every word has passed through dust and hot metal. His laughter is a sudden series of clicks, followed by an embarrassed glance at whoever heard it.”
Clothing
A soot-brown clerk harness crosses his chest and bristles with pockets, loops, wax tubes, cipher parchment, brass lenses, charcoal sticks, seal stamps, and folded route maps. He wears a sleeveless red-orange road coat, tight black trousers reinforced at the knees, soft ash-gray climbing wraps, and a belt of numbered brass tags. His clothing smells of hot metal, old paper, and clove oil.
Body Language
Pip leans forward while listening, keeping one shoulder angled toward the nearest exit. When relaxed, he taps two claws against his harness in a quiet rhythm. When angry, he becomes unnaturally still and lowers his head until the pale counting marks on his snout point directly at the person who offended him.
