Warden Varek Ash-Gaze
Fighter, Battle Master
Warden Varek Ash-Gaze
Species
Dragonborn
Appearance
Varek is a broad-shouldered dragonborn whose charcoal scales carry a dull bronze sheen wherever refinery light touches them. Fine gray dust gathers permanently in the seams around his horns and jaw, while the scales of his hands are polished smooth from years of gripping hot tools and weapon hafts. He moves with deliberate economy, placing each foot as if the floor might give way beneath it. His heavy chainmail clinks beneath a scorched leather apron, an unexpectedly domestic garment that makes him look half guard captain and half exhausted foundry worker. Within a minute of meeting him, most people notice that he checks the small brass buckle at his throat whenever someone mentions missing workers.
“His speech is low, clipped, and measured, with a faint rasp like iron dragged across stone. He pauses before answering questions, not from uncertainty but to decide how much truth the listener can safely carry.”

Distinguishing Features
A polished brass throat buckle shaped like a closed furnace door, which he checks whenever he is troubled
Bronze dust permanently embedded in the ridges of his knuckles
A tail tip wrapped in thin red furnace cord, retied every morning with exact symmetry
A habit of standing with one foot slightly raised on unstable ground, as though constantly testing the surface
His voice briefly becomes gentle when speaking to children, then returns to its hard military cadence
Voice
“A low baritone with a dry metallic rasp, steady as a hammer cadence and capable of dropping into a near-whisper that makes nearby listeners fall silent.”
Clothing
Scorched black leather apron over heavy chainmail, bronze-edged guard pauldrons, ash-gray trousers tucked into iron-capped boots, and a faded red cord around his left wrist. His throat buckle is polished obsessively, while nearly every other piece of equipment bears practical repairs.
Body Language
Varek stands squarely, with his mace held close to his body rather than displayed. His tail makes slow, measured movements when he is thinking and strikes the ground once when he has made a decision. He repeatedly checks the brass throat buckle, rolls one shoulder to settle the chainmail, and angles his body toward the nearest worker instead of the highest-ranking official.
