Gridward Captain Mara Kaelen
Paladin, Oath of the Crown
Gridward Captain Mara Kaelen
Species
Mountain Dwarf
Appearance
Mara is a stocky mountain dwarf built like a load-bearing pillar, with broad shoulders, thick forearms, and a compact stride that never quite becomes a walk when danger is near. Her face is heavily scarred, including a pale seam from her left temple to the corner of her mouth, and her beard is trimmed into two squared forks held by copper pipe-clamps. A thick braid of iron-red hair is tucked beneath a reinforced municipal steel helmet. Her battered Directorate plate is dented inward at the ribs and shoulders, coated with faint green mineral crusts, white salt bloom, and old steam burns that have darkened the metal like bruised skin. She carries a notched warhammer and a heavy shield bearing the scarred insignia of the water-grid defense units. Despite her intimidating armor and furnace-worker silhouette, she has an unexpectedly gentle smile and keeps a tiny porcelain bird clipped inside her collar.
“Her voice is low, rough, and rhythmic, with the clipped cadence of a forewoman issuing instructions over machinery. She rarely raises it because people have learned to listen when she speaks quietly.”

Distinguishing Features
A pale scar crosses her face from temple to mouth.
Her left shoulder moves with a slight mechanical hitch from an old pressure-wheel injury.
Her shield bears seven vertical gouges, one for each team member lost under her command.
A porcelain bird is hidden inside her armor.
Her beard is divided into two squared forks secured with copper pipe-clamps.
The smell of hot iron, mineral water, and rosemary follows her.
Voice
“A gravelly contralto with the vibration of distant machinery, capable of cutting through alarms, rushing water, and crowded work floors”
Clothing
Battered Directorate plate armor over a charcoal pressure-suit, reinforced municipal steel helmet, thick leather gloves, red rescue sash, insulated boots, and a chain of numbered brass valve tags
Body Language
Mara plants her feet wide as if bracing against a flood surge. She turns her entire torso rather than favoring her damaged shoulder, taps her shield rim when thinking, and leans close when someone lies. In moments of private grief, she rubs the porcelain bird hidden beneath her collar.
