Veteran Lockwarden

Harith ibn-Zafar

0·Male·Medium
Lawful neutral, with a growing willingness to defy laws that endanger ordinary people

Species

Human

Appearance

Harith ibn-Zafar is a broad-shouldered man whose body has the dense, weathered solidity of a bridge pier. His face is square and sun-browned, with a flattened nose, a pale scar crossing the left cheek, and a damaged left ear folded inward like a crushed brass cup. His beard is clipped short except for a stubborn white streak beneath the chin. He walks with a slight forward lean, not from age but from the habit of moving against wind, spray, and the pressure of rushing water. His hands are callused, grease-darkened, and surprisingly delicate when examining a hinge or tracing a crack in stone. He leaves the impression of a man who could hold a door shut against a flood, yet he wears a tiny blue silk ribbon around one wrist, carefully preserved and absurdly clean.

HeightSix feet, two inches
BuildPowerfully built, broad through the chest and shoulders, with a compact waist and the heavy forearms of a veteran laborer
EyesDark amber, with the left eye narrowed from years of compensating for damaged hearing
HairBlack shot through with iron gray, cropped close at the sides and tied into a short knot at the back
SkinWarm bronze-brown, weathered by sun, wind, and reflected light from the canals

Low, clipped, and economical. Harith speaks as if every sentence must survive a storm.”

Distinguishing Features

Damaged left ear folded inward from an old sluice accident

A white streak in his otherwise black-and-gray beard

Copper measuring marks tattooed along the fingers of his right hand

A blue silk ribbon tied around his left wrist

A faint vibration tremor in his fingertips when he is near active machinery

Voice

A resonant baritone roughened by years of shouting over rushing water, with a faint rasp caused by damage to the left side of his head

Clothing

A sleeveless, dark indigo guard coat reinforced with overlapping leather scales, a sand-colored engineer's sash, copper-riveted boots, fingerless gloves, and a weatherproof cloak stained pale around the hem by years of canal spray. His belt carries chalk, wire, wedges, measuring cord, spare pins, and a ring of labeled keys.

Body Language

Harith stands with his feet planted wide and his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit or control mechanism. When listening, he touches the damaged edge of his left ear. When angry, he becomes unnervingly still and begins aligning nearby objects with the edge of a table.
