Appearance
Hald Pike is a broad, weathered human who seems to occupy more of a room than his height should allow. He stands with his feet planted wide, one palm usually resting on a counter, as if the building itself might drift away without his supervision. His movements are economical and strangely quiet for such a solid man. He turns by pivoting his whole body, walks with a rolling dockworker's gait, and can remain perfectly still for so long that customers sometimes mistake him for a carved shop figure. His face is square, ruddy, and deeply lined around the mouth from years of squinting at poor workmanship. His hands are thick, dry, and surprisingly delicate when sorting seeds or repairing fine clockwork. He smells faintly of cedar shavings, peppered tea, and rain-soaked rope. The unexpected contradiction is his immaculate handwriting: every inventory mark is formed in elegant, looping script more suited to a court poet than a former soldier.
“His voice is a low, dry baritone with the clipped rhythm of military orders softened by a shopkeeper's patience. He pauses before answering difficult questions and often repeats the final word someone said, as though weighing it for hidden meaning.”

Distinguishing Features
He wears a brass measuring chain that he taps twice against the counter before making an important decision.
His left thumb is permanently darkened by ink from years of marking ledgers.
He has a habit of standing so close that strangers instinctively step backward, though he seems unaware of the effect.
His elegant, looping handwriting contrasts sharply with his blunt speech and rough hands.
Every shelf in The Pike Yard bears a tiny carved pike symbol, including shelves that customers cannot see.
Voice
“A low, resonant baritone that sounds like gravel poured into a wooden box, usually calm and almost conversational. When Hald gives an order, every word lands with the weight of a hammer.”
Clothing
A dark green wool waistcoat over a cream linen shirt, both reinforced with hidden leather panels. He wears a long brown shop apron with fourteen pockets, sturdy gray trousers, soft-soled boots, and a brass measuring chain clipped at his hip. In cold weather he adds a blue naval greatcoat with the insignia carefully removed.
Body Language
Hald leans forward until conversations feel private, then abruptly straightens when someone lies. He keeps his shoulders loose but his hands visible. In danger, he lowers his center of gravity and becomes almost motionless, with the stillness of a bear deciding whether a trap is worth breaking.
