At the table

Voice

Breathy and slightly rasped, with a dry texture from wind, smoke, and long hours speaking outdoors. Her consonants are crisp enough to carry across a clearing, and her sentences tend to end with a practical instruction or a question that expects a real answer.

Her voice has a dry, breathy edge from years of outdoor work and smoke-season field dressings. She places consonants carefully, as if making sure a warning survives wind and distance. Her phrasing is direct and concrete; when she is angry, her words grow faster and more exact rather than softer.

Speech patterns

Uses concrete observations and plain verbs: "That root is split. Step left."
Asks what someone needs before asking why they need it.
When weighing a choice, names its cost aloud rather than dressing it up as fate.
Uses plant names precisely, but explains unfamiliar ones without making a lesson of it.

How to play them

She offers practical help before asking for a full account of a visitor's business. She is candid about risks and suspicious of grand promises. Earn her trust by keeping a small commitment, respecting the grove, or helping someone without demanding praise. She responds to respectful disagreement better than flattery.

Goal

Keep the woodland clearing and its surrounding groves alive while finding a workable arrangement that lets Gritwick's farms survive.

Motivation

She wants to protect both the people who depend on the land and the land that sustains them, even though she knows those needs can conflict.

Appearance

Eshathi has a lean, spring-muscled frame and a grounded, ready stance, as if she is listening through the soles of her feet. Warm, weather-browned skin is dusted with freckles across her nose and shoulders. Her jaw-length black hair is tied back with pink cord, though loose strands catch pollen along her hairline. Her dark hazel eyes rarely settle on faces; they map the room's exits, hands, and worn shoes, then return to whoever is speaking. A faint smell of crushed fennel and damp wool follows her, and she seems unaware of it. She moves with measured steps until a threat appears, when she can cross a clearing in a startling, springing rush. Her presence is less imposing than quietly difficult to ignore.

Clothing

Travel-worn white robes with restrained pink piping and black spiderweb embroidery, layered over practical leather armor. The hems are stained by mud and leaf tannin, and the sleeves have been patched with mismatched thread. A lacquered ivory fox mask rests atop her head, its repaired ear held together with conspicuous pink stitches.

Body language

She keeps her weight evenly balanced and her staff within easy reach. When listening, she turns her head slightly and lets her gaze travel from a speaker's hands to their shoes. Her fingers rub the edge of a paper charm when she is deciding whether to trust someone. In danger, her stillness breaks into quick, economical movement.

Personality

12 traits and drives

Eshathi is attentive to small signs of distress yet impatient with people who romanticize hardship. She can be warm and practical while treating a stranger, then bluntly refuse to agree with their choices. In a crisis she acts decisively; afterward, doubt catches up with her, and she may revisit the decision until she can name what it cost.

Alignment
Neutral Good

Quirks

She folds the corners of discarded paper into tiny birds, then gives them away without explaining why.
She taps a seed pouch twice against her palm before opening it, even when it contains no seeds.
She addresses plants with practical instructions, such as asking a nettle to stay off the path.
She smells her fingers after handling herbs, then looks mildly surprised when they smell of herbs.

Habits

Before entering an unfamiliar space, she looks at its exits, the occupants' hands, and their shoes.
She gives practical aid before asking who deserves it, but remembers who refused help to someone vulnerable.
When upset, she works: cleaning a wound, sorting seeds, or repairing a strap gives her a way to think without withdrawing.
She checks on the grove at dawn and leaves small offerings where the roots have broken through the path.

Traits · 3

She notices discomfort quickly and offers useful help, but dislikes being praised as selfless.
She is decisive under immediate pressure and privately second-guesses herself once everyone is safe.
She finds beauty in untended growth but resents people who use that beauty to excuse neglect of the living.

Flaws · 3

She carries responsibility for outcomes she could not have controlled.
Her willingness to help strangers can leave her without time or supplies for her own needs.
She becomes rigid when someone treats land as property with no obligations attached.

Fears · 3

That another hard choice will cost a community its food or shelter.
That the grove will be reduced to a few protected trees while the rest is cut away.
That people trust her as a healer only because they have not yet seen her fail.

Wants and needs · 3

A lasting agreement that protects the grove without leaving Gritwick's farms unable to feed themselves.
For Tekk to stop cutting into the old woodland.
A chance to tell the fire survivors the truth about the seed she kept.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

She tries to prevent a fight with clear warnings and a visible show of the quarterstaff. If violence begins, she uses Entangle to restrict several foes, then keeps mobile behind her shield and uses Produce Flame at range. She saves Cure Wounds for an ally who is down or near it. She does not pursue a retreating enemy unless that enemy is threatening someone else.

Background

Eshathi grew up among the small farms and coppiced groves around Gritwick, where bramble and nettle spread faster than anyone could clear them. Her mother, Detsi, taught her which plants healed and which merely made a person regret asking. As a young adult, Eshathi trained with the wandering druid Kambek, learning to protect a place without pretending that nature was always gentle. During a dry summer, a fire swept through the edge of the settlement. Eshathi had to choose between saving a storehouse of seed grain and guiding a trapped family through a smoke-choked thicket. She chose the people; the seed was lost, and the settlement went hungry through the next planting season. That choice made her a healer people trusted, but left her wary of easy promises about sacrifice. She now tends a woodland clearing near Gritwick, treats travelers, and tries to keep the hungry, expanding farms from stripping the old grove bare. Detsi wants her to return home; Kambek insists the grove must be allowed to reclaim abandoned fields; and Tekk, a local charcoal burner, keeps cutting deeper into the woodland to pay his debts.

Role in the story

A grounded local ally who can heal the party, explain tensions between the settlement and the woodland, and force the characters to consider who bears the cost of a seemingly simple choice.

“Her mother, Detsi, taught her which plants healed and which merely made a person regret asking.”
From their background
Faction
She has no formal faction. She is a local protector of the grove outside Gritwick and maintains a cautious relationship with its farmsteads.

Known connections

Detsi, her mother, keeps a small farm outside Gritwick and sends stern notes urging Eshathi to come home.
Kambek, her druid mentor, taught her to regard the forest as a living community rather than a resource. They disagree about how much woodland the farms may claim.
Tekk, a charcoal burner, cuts trees at the grove's edge to repay a debt. Eshathi has treated his burns and warned him that she will not keep doing so if he keeps setting careless fires.
The injured family she led from the summer fire still lives near Gritwick. Their youngest child, Pako, visits the clearing to fold paper birds.
