Vaenya Luthis
Vaenya Luthis
At the table
Voice
Vaenya's voice has a dry rasp at the edges, like canvas dragged across a spar, with the steady projection of someone used to being heard over wind and rigging. She can make a warning carry across a dock without shouting. When she is afraid for Teran, her words come faster and her breath catches briefly on his name.
She speaks in a practical, salt-weathered cadence shaped by shipboard orders and years of choosing words carefully around authorities. Her consonants are crisp, her breath slightly roughened by sea air, and she often uses navigational language for choices and risks. When recalling the raid, her sentences become exact and spare, as if every extra word might expose someone.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Vaenya begins by assessing whether the party is safe for Teran and for the people sheltering them. She offers a small, verifiable favor before revealing sensitive information. Practical courage earns her respect; grand promises do not. If pressed about the raid, she deflects toward its political consequences. She will bargain, but refuses to trade another vulnerable person for her own safety.
Goal
Find durable allies, secure evidence of the Drairesse regime's abuses, and establish a place where Teran can live without being hunted or treated as a political symbol.
Motivation
To turn the power she once believed in into protection for people who have none, while keeping Teran beyond the reach of rulers who would use him.
Appearance
Vaenya's scales catch the eye before her face does: brass-gold plates over her brow, shoulders, and ribs grade into sea-green and jade along her flanks. Fine bioluminescent marks, like drifting pollen beneath clear water, thread her neck and tail and glow rose-gold when she is tired or angry. Her scarlet aura is not a visible flame so much as a heat-haze shimmer around her silhouette in strong sunlight. Two swept-back horns rise from her temples, ridged like old ship timber. She moves with a sailor's loose-kneed certainty, placing each foot as if the ground might roll. Her clothes are patched for stealth and weather, but her battered sea chart case is polished and oiled with almost ceremonial care, an unexpected tenderness in a woman who otherwise dresses to disappear.
Clothing
A dark, salt-stiffened travel coat tailored with slits for her horns and tail, over a close-fitting vest and soft boots. Several repairs are visible in mismatched thread, but the seams are neat and strong. She wears a faded scarf high over her glowing neck markings and keeps her chart case immaculate.
Body language
She stands at a slight angle to doors and strangers, never quite offering her back. Her tail makes small, controlled counter-movements when she shifts weight; when anger rises, it goes unnaturally still. She rubs the seam of her chart case with her thumb when weighing a lie, and watches hands before faces.

Distinguishing features
Personality
14 traits and drivesVaenya is candid about immediate dangers but guarded about the wounds behind them. With strangers she is dry, observant, and hard to impress; with frightened children she is patient and unexpectedly playful. She can be merciful toward a frightened enemy, then brutally decisive if that enemy threatens Teran or a refugee. She believes in collective protection but hates being treated as a symbol, and her instinct to carry every risk herself often frustrates the people trying to help her.
- Alignment
- Principled dissenter, willing to lie, steal, and strike first to protect the vulnerable

Vaenya avoids fair fights. She scouts, chooses cover and escape lanes, uses smoke and misdirection, then attacks isolated foes with knives or a bolt. She uses her tail to disrupt pursuers and retreats once Teran or a bystander is threatened. She will take a risk to stop an execution, but will not trade her child's safety for a tactical advantage.

Background
Vaenya was born aboard the pirate ship The Astryx Gale, where her first steps were taken on a deck that never stopped moving. Her mother charted reefs and currents and could identify a sailor by the sound of a cough; her father, Vaelis Starwake, commanded the ship with a steady hand and a reputation that could empty a harbor. From her mother's Solvyrra lineage she inherited brass-gold scales and a scarlet aura; from Vaelis's Serelyth line came jade-green scales, rose-gold aura, and bioluminescent markings. As a child, Vaenya accepted the Drairesse claim that strength entitled her people to rule. That belief broke during a raid on a starving coastal settlement. Drairesse soldiers seized grain from families who had almost nothing left. A young fisherman stood between them and his little sister. Vaenya tried to intervene, but he was killed and the girl disappeared in the flight of villagers. Blood dried beneath Vaenya's nails that night; she scrubbed until the sea stung her skin. She began to speak against Drairesse domination, insisting power should protect rather than possess. When authorities demanded the names of reformers, she refused. Her people cast her out. Vaelis supplied passage and provisions but did not defend her publicly. Their farewell was brief, both afraid that a longer one would make them falter. Years later Vaenya became the mother of Teran, an Ashborn child of Drairesse and Noctari Elf blood. She loves his quiet questions and his habit of searching the stars for answers. Now they move between borrowed rooms in Quadra Virex, where she teaches him to recognize dangerous footsteps. She seeks proof of the regime's crimes and allies who can make a safer home possible. Her old shipmate Theshen now serves the authorities and is searching for Teran. Vaenya's life beyond the party continues through contacts among dockworkers, reformers, and displaced families, all of whom have needs she cannot always meet.
Role in the story
A high-level ally, fugitive parent, and politically dangerous source of evidence. Vaenya can guide the party through covert routes and introduce them to people harmed by the regime. Her past offers personal mysteries, especially the fate of her half-brother's sister, while Theshen's search for Teran can make the conflict immediate.
“As a child, Vaenya accepted the Drairesse claim that strength entitled her people to rule.”
- Faction
