Gat Varo
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Gat Varo is a compact, iron-solid dwarf with a square frame and the deliberate balance of someone who has spent a lifetime walking on loose ledges. Her skin is the color of weathered copper dust, roughened at the knuckles and permanently dark beneath the nails despite constant scrubbing. Her beard is cropped close along the jaw and braided into three narrow cords, each tipped with a tiny stamped assay tag. Her movements are economical and nearly silent, but when she stops she becomes utterly still, like a survey marker hammered into bedrock. She smells of lamp oil, bitter coffee, wet slate, and the faint metallic sweetness of the white filaments. Her eyes are hard and measuring, yet her hands shake whenever she believes nobody is watching. The contradiction is unsettling: she looks like a dwarf carved from a quarry wall, but her careful fingers tremble like those of an old seamstress threading a needle.
“Low, dry, and carefully paced. Her consonants strike like small hammer blows, while important words are preceded by an audible breath held too long.”

Distinguishing Features
Three beard braids tipped with numbered assay tags
A constant scent of lamp oil, bitter coffee, wet slate, and metallic white growth
A habitually narrowed gaze that makes every conversation feel like an inspection
A brass thumb-ring engraved with the mine's original depth, worn on the hand that trembles in private
Her boots are polished at the toes but caked with pale dust around the heels
Voice
“A low contralto rasp with the dry rhythm of gravel poured into a pan. Before speaking, Gat inhales through her nose, pauses, and clears her throat once, as though checking whether the words are structurally sound.”
Clothing
A soot-black canvas coat reinforced with leather panels, a slate-blue waistcoat marked with old mineral stains, heavy work trousers tucked into iron-capped boots, and a brass surveyor's harness hung with calipers, chalk, lenses, sample tubes, and folded measuring chains
Body Language
She leans slightly forward as if listening to the ground, keeps one thumb pressed against the edge of her assay hammer, and angles her body between visitors and nearby mine maps. Her hands are steady in public, but tremble beneath tables, inside sleeves, or behind her back.
