Appearance
Sam Garrand is a broad, weather-beaten man whose presence feels heavier than his body should allow. Dusty sandy blond curls spill irregularly around his ears, usually powdered gray by the mines, and his scruffy dark brown beard is threaded with pale grit that never quite washes out. His skin is sun-browned and scored by fine white lines from years of quarry work. One cheek bears a shallow depression as if someone pressed a thumb into wet clay and left it there. He walks with a measured, heel-first certainty, testing floors and bridges through his soles before trusting them. His hands are enormous and scarred, with blunt nails permanently darkened by ore. Unexpectedly, his eyes are soft and almost shy, and he keeps a small blue ribbon tied around one wrist, an incongruous touch of delicacy against his miner's bulk. People remember him less as a large man than as the person in the room who makes everyone else breathe more slowly.
“Measured and low, with long pauses that make every sentence feel considered. His voice becomes almost gentle when giving safety instructions and turns flat as struck stone when someone threatens his people.”

Distinguishing Features
A shallow thumb-shaped depression in his left cheek from the Kettledeep collapse.
Fine golden lines beneath the skin of his palms that glow when he uses earth magic.
A blue ribbon tied around his left wrist, faded nearly gray with age.
A brass ring made from the first ore he ever mined, worn on a cord around his neck.
His beard often contains flecks of stone dust even immediately after washing.
Voice
“A deep, weathered baritone with a soft rasp, like boots grinding over gravel. When he is angry, the rasp disappears and his voice becomes unnervingly clear.”
Clothing
A patched russet wool coat reinforced with leather at the elbows and shoulders, a soot-stained linen shirt, thick work trousers, and iron-capped boots. He wears a cracked brass mine lamp at his belt and a gray-green scarf inherited from his father. Beneath his shirt is a thin vest of overlapping stone plates that flex like scales.
Body Language
Garrand keeps his shoulders square and his feet planted wide, as if expecting the world to shift beneath him. When listening, he lowers his chin and becomes almost completely still. When angered, he rubs two fingers together, producing a faint sandy rasp. He rarely points, preferring to place his whole hand flat against a wall, table, or person's shoulder.
