At the table

Voice

A salt-roughened, dry-edged voice with a warm undertone, built to carry across a deck. Her vowels broaden when she is amused; under pressure her words turn short and functional, like commands called through wind.

Her voice has a dry rasp from salt air and years of shouting over wind, softened by the easy warmth she uses to make nervous people answer her. She clips consonants when giving orders, stretches the last word of a joke as if testing whether it will hold, and uses sailors' shorthand until she remembers who is listening. Anger brings out a blunt, practical cadence, never a whisper.

Speech patterns

Uses shipboard comparisons for landlocked problems, then catches herself and translates them.
Asks questions that sound casual but reveal whether someone is hungry, afraid, or being coerced.
Gives orders as choices when time allows, and as clipped verbs when danger is immediate.
Uses humor to defuse a room, but never makes a joke at the expense of a frightened subordinate.

How to play them

She judges people by how they treat the least powerful person in the room. Honest trouble earns more of her respect than a polished lie. She bargains fairly, gives clear terms, and offers a face-saving exit when possible. Threatening her crew ends the negotiation; threatening a vulnerable stranger may make her an ally, though she will demand the whole story first.

Goal

Find the missing passenger from her last voyage before Odran's warrants reach the coastal villages, and learn what the Orchard Guest means to collect.

Motivation

To prove command can be firm without becoming ownership, and to keep the people who trust her from paying for her bargains.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Hessa carries herself as if every room were a deck pitching underfoot: loose-kneed, balanced, and forever leaving a little more space around herself than the crowd expects. Her beauty is arresting but not polished, all clean planes, a quick crooked smile, and fine bronze scales that catch light like wet river stones along her jaw, shoulders, and forearms. Her skin is warm umber; a ridge of small, pale-gold scales traces her temples into her hairline. She has a humanlike face and proportions, with a dragonborn's subtly ridged brow, blunt claws, and a tail she uses to steady herself against a rail. Her short dark hair is usually wind-tangled. A small brass compass hangs at her throat, its lower rim rubbed nearly flat by her thumb. She smells faintly of salt, citrus peel, and bow oil. People remember the unnerving ease with which she looks directly at them while already watching the nearest exit.

Clothing

A salt-faded blue captain's coat with one sleeve patched in sailcloth, a cream shirt laced open at the throat, fitted dark trousers, and soft-soled boots. Her belt is crowded with a cutlass, a whetstone, and a small tin of citrus peel. She wears no rank insignia beyond a narrow strip of red cord around one cuff, a reminder of the crew's vote.

Body language

She occupies space without looming, standing where she can see the door and the people who think they are hiding something. Her tail flicks once when she has decided a matter, and her thumb rubs the worn brass rim of her compass whenever she is calculating the human cost of a choice. In good humor she leans too close and grins; when frightened, she becomes briskly industrious, finding ropes to coil and gear to inspect.

Distinguishing features

Her brass compass is conspicuously worn smooth along its lower rim from years of rubbing it with her thumb.
She leaves a deliberate arm's length of room between herself and strangers, even in a packed tavern.
Fine bronze scales glint along her jaw and temples, making her very humanlike face unmistakably draconic at close range.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Hessa is irreverent when a room grows tense and rigorously fair when shares, safety, or promises are at stake. She can be all motion and jokes while scouting, then startlingly grave when someone is hurt. She dislikes being treated as a symbol of freedom, yet bristles when anyone questions her right to command. She is warm with the frightened, suspicious of the flattering, and embarrassed by gratitude.

Alignment
Chaotic Good

Quirks

Taps a compass case twice against her palm before making a decision, even when she has no intention of opening it.
Keeps one dry boot on the table during long negotiations, claiming it improves her ability to smell a lie.
Names knots after people who taught them to her, and scolds the rope when she gets one wrong.
Leaves the final bite of every meal untouched until the youngest person at the table has finished.
When asked for directions, points with her elbow rather than a finger.

Habits

Counts the crew before she counts cargo, even when she pretends the order is reversed.
Makes a show of letting a junior crew member correct her in public, then privately checks whether the correction was sound.
When a deal turns dangerous, she offers the other party a practical way out before drawing steel.
On land, unconsciously braces one hand against walls and doorframes as if testing a ship's roll.

Traits · 3

She makes a joke when a frightened person needs room to breathe, then turns unflinching when the danger becomes real.
She is generous with credit and exacting about a promise.
She loves the freedom of the sea but depends on a crew's trust more than she likes to admit.

Flaws · 3

She hides danger from her crew until she has a plan, which can make them feel managed rather than trusted.
She gives second chances to people who remind her of herself, even when the risk falls on others.
She treats every promise as a debt and struggles to accept kindness without repayment.

Fears · 3

Being forced to choose which crew member to abandon.
That the Orchard Guest will demand a price she cannot pay without betraying someone.
Becoming the kind of captain whose rules matter more than the people they are meant to protect.

Wants and needs · 4

Find the passenger who vanished from her last voyage.
Keep Teren out of the magistrate's investigation.
Tell her crew enough about the Orchard Guest to protect them without provoking panic.
Accept help without converting it into a debt.

Combat

AC 17 · HP 110 · 30 feet, climb 30 feet

Hessa uses terrain, concealment, and mobility rather than trading blows. She opens with Hunter's Mark when she expects a prolonged fight, then targets enemy leaders and ranged attackers with her bow. She uses Misty Step or Nature's Veil to break line of sight, and saves lightning breath for clustered foes or a desperate escape. In shipboard combat she prioritizes keeping allies on their feet and foes away from rigging, hatches, and the helm.

Background

Hessa grew up ferrying nets and contraband between tide villages, the daughter of a human rope-maker and a dragonborn navigator who left before Hessa could remember her. She learned to read currents before letters, then taught herself letters from cargo marks and court notices. At nineteen she signed onto a privateer vessel, where Captain Odran treated the crew's shares as his personal purse. During a storm, he ordered the lower deck locked to keep frightened deckhands from crowding the guns. Hessa cut the lock, led the trapped sailors up through a flooded hatch, and turned the ship's crew against him before dawn. She took command only after the surviving hands voted her in, and she still puts every division of prize money on the table for the crew to witness. Years later, she made a bargain with a fey presence in a drowned orchard to save her ship from a reef; she has never told her crew what it asked in return. Her first mate, Palko, knows her best and argues with her most. Her younger brother, Teren, works as a harbor clerk and quietly feeds her information, though he wants her to stop making his life dangerous. Now a shipping magistrate has issued warrants for her crew, while a missing passenger from her last voyage threatens to bring old secrets into port.

Role in the story

A charismatic ally, rival captain, or uneasy patron whose principles make her dependable but whose fey bargain threatens to place an innocent person in the path of danger. She can provide sea passage, intelligence, and a moral challenge about freedom, responsibility, and the cost of leadership.

“She learned to read currents before letters, then taught herself letters from cargo marks and court notices.”
From their background
Faction
Captain of the privately owned vessel Fair Measure, whose crew calls themselves the Short Share after an old joke about their first ship. Hessa has no formal pirate league allegiance and refuses to take contracts involving the sale or transport of people.

Known connections

Palko, her first mate, is a broad-shouldered hobgoblin who trusts her judgment but challenges her habit of carrying every burden alone.
Teren, her younger human brother, is a harbor clerk who passes her warnings and begs her to keep his name out of her crew's business.
Captain Odran, her former commander, survived the mutiny and now hunts her under legal authority and private spite.
The fey presence called the Orchard Guest saved her ship and expects a favor when it chooses to name one.
