Appearance
Doren is a slight-framed dwarf whose narrow shoulders and quick, economical movements make him look more like a nervous clerk than a tunnel-born survivor. His skin carries a permanent gray-gold cast from years beneath the Smoldering Vaults, with soot lodged in the fine creases around his knuckles. Sandy-brown hair sticks out in uneven tufts and is pulled back with a scrap of copper wire that has been twisted so tightly it bites into the braid. His eyes dart constantly when he is idle, measuring exits, boots, windows, and hands, but become utterly still when he reads. Ink stains climb from his fingertips toward his wrists in branching blue-black smudges. He walks with a soft, sideways shuffle designed for crowded corridors, yet when pursuing evidence he moves with startling certainty, sliding between workers and machinery like a needle through cloth. The contradictory impression he leaves is of fragility wrapped around a hard, almost predatory attention. His clothes are threadbare and dusty, but every hidden pocket is meticulously organized.
“Normally soft, quick, and breathy, with frequent self-corrections. When discussing evidence, his voice becomes clipped and authoritative, each sentence delivered like a line being entered into an official record.”

Distinguishing Features
Ink stains form a dark crescent beneath each fingernail.
A copper wire binds his uneven braid and doubles as an emergency lock shim.
His left eyebrow has a pale scar from a falling brass filing drawer.
He carries a tiny red thread tied around one finger for every missing page he is tracking.
His eyes become unnervingly motionless whenever he detects a forgery.
Voice
“A thin, hurried tenor that often sounds as though it is trying not to disturb the room. Under concentration it sharpens into a dry, authoritative clerk's cadence.”
Clothing
A frayed municipal clerk's doublet with faded brass buttons, reinforced inner seams, and deep concealed pockets stuffed with stolen carbon paper, rolled parchment slips, coded ration chits, graphite packets, and brass-nibbed pens. He wears soft-soled work boots, fingerless gloves, and a patched gray scarf that smells faintly of lamp oil and old paper.
Body Language
Doren keeps his elbows tucked close, shoulders hunched, and hands hovering near his document pockets. His eyes flick toward movement before his head follows. When focused, he stops blinking and leans over evidence until his nose nearly touches the page. If frightened, he presses one thumb against the copper wire in his hair as though checking that it is still there.
