Torben Iron-Vein
Fighter, Battle Master
Torben Iron-Vein
Species
Dwarf
Appearance
Torben is a broad, compact dwarf built like a gatehouse foundation, with thick wrists, a heavy chest, and a measured gait that makes every step seem tested against the ground. His silver-threaded beard is braided into five dense cords, each wrapped with a different mineral bead representing one of the largest Basalt Step clans. Fine gray dust lives permanently in the beard's lower strands. His hands are square and heavily callused, but his nails are kept meticulously clean, an old habit from inspecting ore samples. He watches floors, ceilings, doorframes, and load-bearing joints before he looks at faces. His expression is hard to read until someone mentions a dead miner, at which point his mouth softens before he can stop it. The unexpected gentleness of his careful hands contrasts with the brutal efficiency of his movements in a fight.
“His voice is low, dry, and roughened by forge smoke. He pauses before important answers with a slow intake through his nose, as if testing the air for loose stone.”

Distinguishing Features
Five beard braids, each carrying a different mineral bead that identifies a major Basalt Step Clan
A habit of looking at architecture before people
A black iron thumb-ring stamped with the names of the twelve miners he rescued
Dust permanently caught in the lower strands of his beard despite constant washing
A quiet, controlled manner that becomes more intimidating than shouting
Voice
“A gravelly baritone with a restrained rhythm, carrying the dry rasp of stone dragged across stone. His rare laugh begins as a cough and ends abruptly, as if he has remembered the room is listening.”
Clothing
Reinforced quarry-plate armor worn over a charcoal wool tunic, with layered leather at the joints and a red-brown sash marked by the seven council seals. His heavy boots are fitted with iron climbing studs. A weathered gray mantle hangs from one shoulder, its hem stitched with the names of fallen pass guards.
Body Language
Torben stands with his feet planted wide and his shoulders slightly forward, as if bracing against a slope. He taps two fingers against his hammer's haft while thinking, stops moving entirely when someone lies, and leans close when listening to frightened people. In council, his eyes move constantly toward exits, ceiling joints, and the hands of whoever is speaking.
