Bheku seems to take up less room than he does: he folds his long arms close, turns sideways through crowds, and moves with a soft, deliberate shuffle that makes people notice him only after he is beside them. His broad, flour-dusted hands are unexpectedly gentle with chipped cups. Before speaking, he draws a tiny breath through his nose, as if testing the room's mood. He has warm brown skin, a narrow face, and a close-cropped beard threaded with silver. His eyes are lively and attentive, and his smile is so welcoming that it makes his watchful stillness all the more surprising.
