Tariq ibn-Vara
Windward Captain
Tariq ibn-Vara
Species
Air Genasi
Appearance
Tariq cuts a sharp, purposeful figure even when standing still. His rugged bronze skin is weather-polished and faintly dusted with pale mineral grains that cling to him after every canyon crossing. His disciplined dark hair is braided close at the temples but breaks into wind-tossed strands above his brow, as if the gale refuses to leave him entirely alone. His gaze is watchful and calculating, always measuring exits, cargo weight, wind direction, and the distance between a promise and its betrayal. He moves with economical precision, planting each foot as though the ground might tilt without warning. The unexpected contradiction is his hands: scarred, callused, and capable of ordering armed smugglers into danger, yet remarkably gentle when repairing children's kites or pouring tea.
“Precise, clipped, and quietly authoritative. Tariq speaks in short operational sentences, rarely wastes a word, and becomes almost lyrical when describing wind patterns or people he trusts.”

Distinguishing Features
A thin white scar crosses his left eyebrow and disappears into his hairline.
The fingertips of his right hand are permanently stained blue-black from handling encrypted ledger ink.
A brass wind-spinner hangs from his left ear and turns even in still air.
His coat bears twelve tiny stitched symbols, one for each life he failed to save on his first convoy.
His shadow sometimes ripples a heartbeat before he moves.
Voice
“A low, dry baritone with a faint rasp, like wind dragging grit across stone. He never needs to shout, and his rare laughter sounds startled by its own existence.”
Clothing
A heavily customized wind-tight captain's coat of dark indigo oilcloth, reinforced with concealed ceramic and steel plates. Copper fasteners trace the seams like tiny lightning bolts. He wears a sand-colored scarf wrapped around his throat, magnetic deck-boots with segmented soles, fingerless gloves, and a belt crowded with signal flags, chalk, spare quarrels, and sealed brass tokens.
Body Language
Tariq stands with his shoulders squared and his weight balanced over both feet, as if braced against an invisible deck. He taps two fingers against his wrist when calculating, angles his body toward exits, and briefly closes one eye when someone gives an answer he considers incomplete.
