Somara
Somara
At the table
Voice
A road-weathered voice with a dry, breathy edge, built to carry across a wagon yard without shouting. Her words land firmly and evenly; if fear breaks through, her breath catches before her voice does.
She speaks in clipped, well-placed phrases shaped by years of giving directions over wind, wheels, and harness noise. Her consonants are clear, her breath has a faint dry rasp from road dust, and she tends to finish a thought before looking away to scan the horizon. When rattled, her breathing catches in two quick nasal pulls and the light at her throat flickers.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Somara first assesses whether visitors threaten the caravan or the children. Be direct about practical needs and do not demand that Raxtorim prove his remorse to you. She warms to people who keep promises, help without grandstanding, or treat Bolt and the children as people rather than baggage. Offer useful information about Mandate patrols and she will share what she knows in return.
Goal
Build a reliable network of safe roads and shelters so her family and other fugitives can travel without being returned to the Mandate.
Motivation
Protect her family without letting the Mandate decide what kind of person Raxtorim is allowed to become.
Appearance
Somara is a tall, broad-shouldered Drairesse whose verdant jade scales overlap like small, polished leaves. Fine bioluminescent tracery winds from her throat over her collarbones and down her forearms, glowing green when night falls. A rose-gold aura clings close to her silhouette, most visible around her horns and the edges of her scales. Her hands are broad and callused from reins, bowstrings, and hauling wagon gear; the pads of her fingers have a permanent dark stain from crushed trail herbs. She walks with a measured, ground-testing stride, as though every surface might conceal a loose stone. The unexpected detail is a tiny, carefully stitched pouch of bright children's buttons fastened inside her belt, absurdly cheerful against her travel-worn kit.
Clothing
Layered road clothes in dull green and brown, a weatherproof shoulder mantle, reinforced trousers, soft boots, and a broad belt with practical loops. She wears a faded family scarf knotted at one wrist and keeps the children's button pouch tucked out of sight.
Body language
She keeps her shoulders angled toward the nearest exit and her feet planted as if braced against a wagon's sway. In welcoming company she opens her hands, palms visible; when she distrusts someone, one hand settles near her bow without quite touching it. When rattled, she draws a breath through her nose in two short pulls, and the light along her throat pulses unevenly.

Personality
14 traits and drivesSomara is warm in practical ways, offering a dry cloak or a place by the fire, yet slow to share her own fears. She is patient with frightened people and impatient with anyone who treats cruelty as a matter of paperwork. At ease, she teases her children and lets them see her uncertainty; under pressure, she becomes sharply decisive and tries to carry every risk herself. She believes in second chances, but not in forgetting what someone has done.
- Alignment
- Protective pragmatist; she puts the safety of people in her care ahead of laws serving the Draconic Mandate.

HP 112 · 30 feet per round (custom profile)Somara prefers to spot danger early, place allies behind cover, and make the enemy cross open ground. She uses her bow to hinder threats before they reach the caravan, then switches to her spear to protect a narrow approach. She will break contact rather than risk the family or caravan for a clean victory. Against slavers, she is notably less willing to retreat.

Background
Somara grew up among Drairesse caravans whose routes and labor were controlled by cities aligned with the Draconic Mandate. She became a ranger because she was better at reading a road than accepting the route someone else had chosen for her. For years she and her husband, Raxtorim, worked around the edges of the Mandate's slave-trade caravans. Raxtorim drove one such caravan, telling himself that staying in the trade let him soften its cruelties. That excuse ended when the caravan was found broken and scattered on the road. In the wreckage, Raxtorim and Somara helped rescue Bolt, a young Qissinian captive. The rescue and Raxtorim's decision to abandon the trade made them fugitives and exiles in Mandate-aligned Drairesse cities. The Saint Regent of Quadra Virex granted the family sanctuary and clemency. They now travel and work with the Wanderer's Wayfarers, the Regent's private caravan of skilled workers. Somara keeps the family moving, but sanctuary has not erased the danger: Mandate agents still search the roads, Raxtorim is haunted by the people he once transported, and their children are old enough to understand why home may need to be left at a moment's notice. Somara wants to make Quadra Virex safe enough that her children can choose their own roads.
Role in the story
A capable guide, a protective ally, and a living link between the Mandate's slave-trade routes and the people trying to break them. Her family's safety can give a campaign a personal stake in the politics of sanctuary.
“She became a ranger because she was better at reading a road than accepting the route someone else had chosen for her.”
