Jorun Gravel-Grip
Jorun Gravel-Grip
At the table
Voice
A low, grain-rough voice shaped by years of calling instructions through wind and stonefall. Before answering a difficult question, he draws a dry, rasping breath through his teeth and holds it for a beat. When startled, that breath catches sharply; he forces it out before speaking, and the first words come clipped and precise.
He speaks in measured, practical phrases, with a gravelly scrape at the start of sentences after long climbs. His words have the cadence of someone used to giving directions over wind and falling stone. When he is rattled, his breath rasps audibly through his teeth before his speech resumes, and he becomes more exact rather than louder.

How to play them
Offer practical help before asking for trust. Jorun respects people who listen to local warnings and admit uncertainty. He will guide travelers who accept his safety rules, but refuses to disguise a dangerous route as safe for the sake of a fee. If pressed, he explains the consequences and lets others choose, unless their choice puts bystanders at immediate risk.
Goal
Keep the Mist-Step Switchbacks safe and locally governed while training guides who can make hard calls without waiting for his permission.
Motivation
He believes a guide's first duty is to bring people home, even when doing so costs money, status, or gratitude.
Appearance
Jorun has the dense, weathered look of a boulder that has endured a century of rain. His skin is dark gray with fine, pale mineral flecks that catch the light like grains of mica; short, tightly curled hair grows in a slate-brown ridge between his copper-bound spiral horns. He moves with a climber's deliberate economy, feet testing the ground before his weight follows. When he listens, he draws a small, rasping breath through his teeth, then holds it for a beat, a habit strangers notice before they learn his name. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, hand-sewn cloth bird tucked into his collar, a child's gift he mends with bright thread.
Clothing
Fitted studded leather under a weather-darkened climbing coat, reinforced at the elbows and hips. His boots have replaceable gripping studs, and copper loops on his harness carry rope, pitons, and a compact hammer.
Body language
He plants both feet before giving difficult news and angles his shoulders toward the nearest safe route. When rattled, his breath catches in a dry rasp; he taps one horn with a knuckle, then makes himself exhale slowly. He rarely points, preferring to lay a line or a stone where he wants someone to look.

AC 16 · HP 67 · 30 ft., climb 30 ft.Jorun uses rocky ground and elevation to break enemy formations, striking to shove threats away from allies or toward safer ground. He targets creatures threatening the least mobile member of the group, restrains dangerous runners with bolas, and avoids trading blows when he can redirect a fight. If the terrain begins to fail, he prioritizes getting everyone out over winning.

Background
Born among the Talus-Dweller families of the Talus Shelf, Jorun Gravel-Grip learned to read stonefall by sound before he could carry a pack. He joined the Loose-Stone Guides as a young climber, eventually becoming their master guide at Screefoot. During the Grayfall Season, an ore concern pressured a caravan to cross the Mist-Step Switchbacks despite a slope loosening above the route. Jorun obeyed the order at first. When the hillside gave way, he cut the lead animal's traces and turned the survivors into a narrow ravine, saving most of the caravan but losing his closest climbing partner, Nalo, beneath the debris. Since then he has closed unsafe trails even when powerful traders threaten his livelihood. Nalo's sister, Pema, runs a pack stable in Screefoot and still blames him for the choices he made that day. Jorun trains apprentices, guides caravans, and is trying to secure enough local support to keep the Mist-Step route under community control. A growing dispute over ore traffic is testing whether his caution can survive pressure from people who need the pass open.
