Nkem
Nkem
At the table
Voice
A dry, bright rasp shaped by shouting prices over market clatter and giving hurried directions in narrow lanes. Their breath catches slightly after long runs, but the words remain precise; frustration makes the consonants land harder, as if each sentence were a type block set firmly in place.
Nkem speaks in clipped, workmanlike phrases, with crisp consonants and the faint rasp of someone accustomed to calling directions across a noisy stall. They borrow printers' terms for everyday judgments and sometimes leave a thought unfinished while checking the room.

How to play them
Offer a small, verifiable piece of information first and watch whether the party protects it or exploits it. Nkem trades maps for concrete aid, safe passage, or proof that a threatened neighbor has somewhere to go. Earn trust by respecting the people marked on a map, not merely the map itself.
Goal
Print a reliable map of Meridian's threatened lower lanes and get its residents safely relocated before officials seal the passages.
Motivation
Make truthful information reachable by ordinary people, without turning those people into targets.
Appearance
Compact even for a goblin, Nkem has a forward-leaning, spring-loaded way of standing, as if the ground were a page about to turn. Their gaze rarely settles on a face: it checks exits, rooflines, hands, and the blank spaces between people, measuring a room like a map. They walk with quick, precise steps and always favor the edge of a crowd. Copper printing ink has stained their tongue and the creases at its tip; when they think, they press it briefly against one sharp tooth. Their skin has a fine, pebbled texture, and their ears twitch at the clack of a press. The unexpected detail is a tiny bell sewn into the collar of every coat they own. Nkem claims it is to hear when a coat is stolen, though each bell is carefully muffled with thread.
Clothing
A patched short coat with a tiny bell sewn into the collar, one thick leather glove and one thin knitted glove, a printer's apron stiff with old ink, and soft-soled boots for crossing crowded lanes. Every coat has a different muffling knot tied around its bell.
Body language
Weight pitched toward the nearest gap, shoulders tucked as if passing through a narrow doorway. One hand often hovers near a pocket of folded maps. When listening closely, Nkem's eyes track the listener's hands rather than their expression.

Personality
12 traits and drivesNkem is suspicious of easy promises but generous with practical help, and can be both a careful listener and an infuriatingly evasive friend. Under pressure, they become decisive and dryly funny; when someone offers sincere kindness, they often retreat into nitpicking or a small bargain. They want people to know the truth, yet fear what happens when the truth is printed where everyone can find it.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 7 · 30 ft.Avoids a fair fight. Nkem throws a printer's slug or wet broadside to disrupt an attacker, uses crowds and stalls as cover, then slips away through a gap. They will risk a distraction to protect a bystander but will not pursue a fleeing enemy.

Background
Nkem learned printing as a child in a cramped shop off Meridian's lower market, where their mother, Deka, ran notices for anyone who could pay in food, favors, or clean paper. Nkem loved the work's certainty: set a letter backward, press it down, and a thought appeared where everyone could see it. That certainty broke during the Floodgate Muster. Officials posted a map that omitted a lane of cellar homes, and when the water rose, Nkem's family helped guide neighbors through passages the official map denied existed. Nkem's younger cousin, Tavi, survived, but Deka was arrested for distributing an unauthorized route map and never came home. Since then Nkem has printed cheap broadsides and drawn accurate maps of streets the authorities prefer to forget. Their current press is hidden beneath a shuttered spice stall near Tax Roll 4, an old survey designation now used as a neighborhood landmark. Tavi carries messages and wants Nkem to flee Meridian; Nkem's former employer, Korm, wants the stolen press plates returned before the watch finds them. Nkem also quietly supplies safe routes to the tenants displaced by new construction, while arguing with themself about whether another public map will put those same people in danger.
