At the table

“The mountain did most of the work. I merely argued with it.”
From how they speak

Voice

A dry, steady rasp shaped by cold air, shouted warnings, and years of breathing through wool in mountain storms. It carries without sounding loud; consonants land cleanly, while her breath catches slightly on words that begin with a hard K.

Her words have the clipped clarity of someone accustomed to giving directions over sleet and distance. She favors practical verbs, names sensations precisely, and rarely wastes a sentence on ceremony. When talking about family, she begins with a task or an observation before admitting what she feels.

Speech patterns

Uses short, concrete directions in an emergency: "Two steps left. Wait for my hand."
Describes danger through practical sensations, such as pressure, grit, or a change in the air.
Asks questions in pairs: first what happened, then who was left behind.
Uses dry humor when someone tries to praise her: "The mountain did most of the work. I merely argued with it."

How to play them

Veyra is direct and observant with strangers. She offers practical help before personal warmth, then watches whether people keep their word. Respect her attention to safety and she becomes a dependable ally; dismiss the possibility of danger and she will end the conversation to inspect it herself.

Goal

Find out why the old rift has started making noise again, without turning the pass into a battlefield or frightening the refugees who settled nearby.

Motivation

Veyra believes a guardian's work is to make sure other people have the chance to choose what comes next. She wants to protect the pass without letting protection become an excuse to control everyone around her.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

Veyra has the still, braced posture of someone expecting the ground to shift beneath her. Her eyes travel to doorways, corners, and the empty air between people before they settle on a face. She smells distinctly of cold iron and crushed juniper, a scent she seems not to notice. Her dark hair is cropped close at the nape but grows into a stubborn, wind-tangled crest. The unexpected detail: she keeps a tiny, carefully tended nest of bright blue yarn tucked into her collar, a refugee child's gift that she repairs whenever a thread comes loose. She moves with economical steps, placing each foot as though testing whether the world is solid.

Clothing

A layered charcoal wool coat beneath a weatherproof slate-blue mantle, both patched with neat, visible stitches. Her forearms are wrapped in leather guards scored by years of glaive work. A faded red scarf is looped twice around her neck, and the blue yarn nest at her collar is conspicuously out of place.

Body language

She stands with one foot slightly behind the other and keeps her weight ready to shift. When listening, she tilts her head as if feeling for a vibration rather than straining to hear. She looks past people toward possible exits, then deliberately returns her attention to them.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Patient enough to wait out a storm, but impatient with preventable risks. She is warmest while doing useful work and most guarded when thanked. In a crisis she becomes brisk and decisive; in a quiet room she can be awkward, attentive, and unexpectedly funny. She wants people to be free, yet her fear of losing them makes her overprotective.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Turns cups so their handles point toward the nearest exit.
Taps the flat of her glaive twice against stone before sleeping, then once more if the air feels wrong.
Keeps a running count of people in a room and starts over whenever someone enters.
Repairs frayed cuffs with blue thread, even when the garment belongs to someone else.
Smells a doorway before crossing it when she thinks nobody is watching.

Habits

Checks thresholds and open arches before entering a room.
Counts people in a crowd by quietly touching one knuckle for each person.
When frightened, she becomes more practical and gives clear instructions rather than admitting fear.
After a dangerous event, she spends time repairing a small object even if it is not hers.

Traits · 4

Measures kindness by whether someone notices who has been left out.
Can hold a position for hours but struggles to sit still through a family conversation.
Distrusts grand promises and remembers small, kept ones.
Offers practical comfort before emotional reassurance.

Flaws · 3

Treats her own exhaustion as irrelevant until it compromises someone else's safety.
Can mistake caution for responsibility and delay decisions that require trust.
Avoids asking for help because she believes a guardian should be the last person to need it.

Fears · 3

That the rift will return when no one is there to hold it.
That her daughter will stop writing before Veyra finds the courage to visit.
That the three days of endurance were only luck, not skill.

Wants and needs · 3

Wants the rift's strange dawn sound explained before another evacuation begins.
Needs to trust the other wardens enough to share responsibility.
Wants to visit Pell in the lowlands and speak to her without pretending the pass is the only thing that matters.

Combat

AC 15 · HP 27 · 30 ft.

Veyra prioritizes evacuation and containment over defeating enemies. She holds narrow approaches, uses her glaive to keep threats at reach, and directs allies toward safe ground. She will disengage rather than pursue, but will not abandon a person who is still crossing a dangerous threshold.

Custom Void Warrior discipline. Veyra learned to brace a spatial rupture by matching her breath to its pulses. This is a practiced technique, not a standard class feature.
Rift-Listening. She can sense a nearby planar tear as pressure changes in her teeth and inner ear, but cannot determine its exact origin.
Level 0. Veyra is a nonclassed, nonspellcasting NPC. Her statistics use a simple 5e-inspired custom profile, not official class rules.

Actions

Passwarden's Glaive. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 () slashing damage, or 7 () if used with both hands. These are custom NPC statistics.
Hold the Seam. Custom feature, recharge 5–6. Veyra plants her glaive and braces a point she can see within 10 feet. Until the start of her next turn, one creature attempting to cross that point must succeed on a Strength saving throw or stop before crossing. This cannot restrain a creature already beyond the point and does not affect creatures larger than Large.
Clear the Pass. Veyra calls a warning and directs one ally within 30 feet who can hear her. That ally may use its reaction to move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. Custom support action.

Reactions

Brace the Threshold. Custom feature, once per round. When a creature Veyra can see within 5 feet is forced to move, she may use her reaction to plant her glaive and reduce that forced movement by 5 feet. This cannot stop movement caused by a creature more than one size larger than her.

Services they sell

Guides travelers through Kestrel Pass when conditions are safe.
Teaches basic defensive positioning and evacuation signals.
Can assess signs of planar instability from experience, though she is not a scholar or spellcaster.

Rewards they can give

A safe route through Kestrel Pass, if the party helps her investigate the rift's warning signs.
A warden's signal whistle that can summon local help once in the pass.
Her hard-earned trust and a letter of introduction to the pass watch.

Equipment

  • Passwarden's glaive (weapon)A long, plain glaive with a wrapped grip and a small notch cut near the blade's base to mark her three days at the rift.
  • Layered warden's coat (armor)A scuffed coat reinforced at the shoulders and forearms; represented by her custom AC of 15.
  • Rift-trembler (tool)A fist-sized brass disc that trembles faintly near the old rift. It is not a reliable compass.
  • Personal keepsakes (keepsake)A patched red scarf and the blue yarn nest given to her by a refugee child.

Background

Veyra grew up guiding mule trains through the wind-cut Kestrel Pass, where she learned to read weather by the taste of the air and the creak of loaded harness. Her partner, Oruv, maintained the old warning beacons; their daughter, Pell, wanted a life in the lowland orchards and left home at sixteen. Veyra joined the pass wardens after a winter slide buried a caravan whose warnings she had dismissed as ordinary rockfall. Years later, a rift opened in the pass during an evacuation. Veyra held its edge shut with a borrowed glaive and a discipline she had only practiced in fragments while refugees crossed behind her. For three days she barely slept, speaking to the tear as if it were a stubborn gate. The refugees survived, but the event left her unable to trust still air. Oruv now repairs the beacon she neglected during the crisis, while Pell writes from the lowlands asking her to come visit. Veyra keeps postponing the journey. The pass is safe for now, but the old rift has begun making a sound like a distant kettle just before dawn.

Role in the story

A renowned local guardian whose account of holding a rift shut has become half folk tale and half warning. She can guide the party through the pass, offer a grounded perspective on planar danger, and become an ally or obstacle depending on whether they take the emerging threat seriously.

“Her partner, Oruv, maintained the old warning beacons; their daughter, Pell, wanted a life in the lowland orchards and left home at sixteen.”
From their background
Faction
Former pass warden; still trusted by the Kestrel Pass watch, though she holds no formal command.
