Ilyet Adebayo
Ilyet Adebayo
At the table
Voice
Her voice has a dry, papery edge from years of leaning over vats and speaking through steam, but its rhythm is steady and warm. Before she speaks, she takes one measured breath through her nose. When excited, she clips her sentences short, as if trying to keep them from overflowing.
She speaks in clear, practical phrases, with pauses that feel like she is checking the weight of each word before setting it down. Years around dye vats and river traffic have given her a habit of describing danger in terms of pressure, flow, and things that will not stay contained. Her father's river sayings occasionally slip into her speech, though she denies borrowing them.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach her with a concrete problem and give her time to consider it. She responds well to honesty, shared work, and people who do not mistake caution for cowardice. If pressed about her family, she deflects toward practical matters; a patient listener may earn the truth.
Goal
Learn to control her unpredictable magic and return to Oruw able to help her family without putting them in danger.
Motivation
Ilyet wants her magic to become a tool she can trust, not a weather front everyone must survive.
Appearance
Ilyet is a young woman of medium height and slight build, with a habit of standing as if she has just remembered an appointment elsewhere. She moves in quick, economical half-steps, then stops so completely that people sometimes mistake her for a painted figure. When she turns, her shoulders lead a fraction before her face follows. Her presence is modest at first: a spare silhouette, a still gaze, and the dry smell of candle smoke. Then a loose thread at her cuff lifts toward her skin as if caught in a breeze no one else can feel.
Clothing
A plain, clean, brown homespun dress, a patched wool shawl, sturdy boots, and a cord belt. She owns no jewelry and avoids loose sleeves near open flame.
Body language
She keeps her hands close to her sides and often hooks one thumb through her belt cord. When she is thinking, she taps the pad of each finger against her thumb in a sequence that never repeats. Her stillness is not confidence so much as careful containment; when she relaxes, her weight shifts onto the balls of her feet.

Background
Ilyet grew up above a dyer's shop in the riverside town of Oruw. Her mother, Bisi, taught her to mend hems and keep accounts; her father, Olan, ferried passengers across the river and told stories that changed each time he told them. At sixteen, Ilyet was helping to dry a length of indigo cloth when a thunderclap struck under a clear sky. Every dye vat in the shop boiled at once, and the blue pigment rose in a perfect spiral around her. No one was hurt, but the shop's old rafters still bear blue stains that never wash away. That day taught her that fear can be useful, but secrecy can become a cage. She left for the market town of Tallowford to learn what her magic was and send money home. She now rents a cot from an apothecary, Edda Quill, and secretly sends most of her earnings to her father's former ferry partner, who is paying off a debt her family cannot afford. Ilyet wants to return home with control of her gift, but every uncontrolled spark makes that future feel less certain.
