Elarra Hollowreed
Elarra Hollowreed
At the table
Voice
A dry, breath-forward voice shaped by years of smoke, cold air, and speaking across uneven ground. Her consonants are clean and practical, as if each word must carry without being wasted. She breathes steadily while calm, but a sudden threat catches her breath for a beat and leaves a brief reedlike rasp.
Her words have the clipped clarity of someone used to calling directions through wind and brush. She describes people by what they do rather than what they claim. When speaking around a fire, her sentences lengthen and acquire small, wry observations; in a crowd, she compresses them to essentials. When rattled, she takes one held breath and releases it in a dry rasp before speaking.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Approach her with time, plain terms, and a willingness to share a quiet meal. She responds well to people who respect the land and do not press for an immediate answer. A crowded approach or grand promise makes her guarded. She can be persuaded by practical evidence that a plan leaves room for people and wilderness to recover.
Goal
Protect the winter nesting ground from the new road and reunite enough of her old pack to negotiate a lasting boundary.
Motivation
To repay the people who saved her without treating their past kindness as permission to spend the future of the land.
Appearance
Elarra has the soot-brown skin and wiry, weather-shaped bearing of an Ashen Veyr raised among scrub forests. Fine, pale lines like dried riverbeds pattern her forearms, and her dark hair is gathered in a loose braid threaded with reed fibers and tiny seedpods. A small crown of living thorn shoots, carefully pruned and wrapped with soft grass, circles her head. She moves with a hunter's economical quiet, placing each foot as if testing the ground for a hidden snare. Within a minute of meeting her, people notice her thumb repeatedly checking the smooth wooden toggle at her collar; when rattled, she holds her breath for a beat, then lets it out in a dry, reedlike rasp.
Clothing
A smoke-gray wrap coat patched with barkcloth, soft leather leggings, and reed-woven gaiters that muffle her steps. Her gloves are fingerless for handling bowstring and seedpods. A weathered green sash holds small tools, and a practical hood is cut to fit around her thorn crown.
Body language
She stands with her weight ready to shift and her shoulders angled toward open ground. Her hands stay busy with the collar toggle, a reed braid, or the edge of a glove. When she is comfortable, she turns fully toward whoever is speaking and tends the fire while listening. When alarmed, she stills so completely that only her thumb betrays her, rubbing the toggle in short, quick strokes.

Personality
12 traits and drivesShe finds crowded celebrations exhausting but loves a quiet gathering around a shared fire. She wants every hunt, harvest, and act of vengeance to leave room for renewal, yet her caution can harden into suspicion before she has heard someone out. In danger she becomes crisp and decisive; among trusted companions she is dryly funny and unexpectedly generous. When grieving, she works with her hands rather than discussing what she has lost.

Combat
AC 13 · HP 11 · 30 ft.Elarra avoids a fair fight. She uses cover, height, and difficult ground to keep distance, shooting at a pursuer's legs or weapon hand rather than seeking a killing blow. If an ally is threatened, she closes with her spear and uses Scatterthorn to obstruct pursuit or create an escape route. She retreats when outnumbered and will negotiate if fighting risks harming the land or bystanders.

Background
Elarra grew up in a mobile hunting pack that followed the seasonal herds through the bracken country. In her youth, she helped guide the pack through a smoke-choked ravine after an early wildfire turned their usual trail into a trap. She survived because her companions hauled her from a collapsed root hollow and shared their last water. That night changed her understanding of survival: taking from a place, or from one another, had to be followed by a chance to recover. She now lives at the edge of the settlement called Warm-Sound, named for the low wind that hums through its chimney gaps. She trades tracking and safe passage for supplies, while trying to bring her scattered old pack back together. Her former packmate Duma wants her to help settle an old hunting-ground dispute; her friend Biko, a patient charcoal burner, thinks she should stop treating every new promise like a trap. Elarra is also trying to keep a new road crew from cutting through the pack's winter nesting grounds.
Role in the story
A wary guide and potential ally whose conflict over a new road lets the party choose between quick convenience and a more careful bargain. Her old pack's unresolved debt can draw the characters into a dispute over land, kinship, and what repayment actually means.
