Linus Vance
Species
Gnome
Appearance
Linus Vance is a compact, sharp-featured gnome whose movements are unnervingly exact. He walks with quick, measured steps, never quite wasting a fraction of an inch, and turns pages with the care of a surgeon handling a living organ. Heavy copper-rimmed spectacles magnify his pale gray eyes until they seem almost owl-like. His hands are narrow and precise, usually hidden inside dark leather gloves mottled with black, violet, and rust-colored ink. The contradictory impression he leaves is that of a fragile clerk who somehow occupies a room like a locked door. He looks breakable, but when an archive is threatened, he becomes utterly immovable. His clothes smell faintly of iron gall ink, dust, and rain trapped in stone.
“Precise, breathless, and densely qualified. Linus speaks in short bursts when frightened and long, perfectly structured explanations when discussing records.”

Distinguishing Features
Heavy copper-rimmed spectacles etched with tiny filing codes.
Dark leather gloves permanently stained by several colors of ink.
A thin white scar across the bridge of his nose from a falling archive ladder.
A left ear pierced with three brass loops, each bearing a different obsolete municipal seal.
His shadow occasionally appears to turn a page before he does.
Voice
“A quick, dry tenor with a faint rasp, as if every sentence has been dragged across rough paper. When calm, he sounds like a meticulous lecturer. When afraid, his words accelerate until they become a stream of dates, clauses, and filing codes. When furious, his voice drops into a soft, chilling monotone.”
Clothing
A charcoal-green waistcoat beneath a high-collared black clerk's coat, reinforced brown trousers, polished ankle boots, dark ink-stained leather gloves, and a narrow copper chain holding a magnifying loupe. His vest pockets are meticulously stocked with calibrated glass ink-vials, spare steel nibs, sealing wax, thread, and folded emergency forms.
Body Language
Linus keeps his elbows close to his ribs and often presses two gloved fingertips together as though aligning invisible pages. Around violence, his shoulders rise nearly to his ears and his feet angle toward the nearest exit. When defending records, he plants both feet, removes his spectacles, and stares over them with startling severity.
