Phineas "Phin" Saffron-Ink
Commoner Archivist
Phineas "Phin" Saffron-Ink
Species
Rock gnome
Appearance
Phineas is a frail elderly gnome who appears as though a strong sneeze might carry him into the nearest filing cabinet, yet he moves through the archive with the noiseless certainty of a spider crossing paper. His wrinkled face is framed by a wild halo of white hair, with individual strands stiffened by old ink and sealing wax. Thick magnifying spectacles rest on a crooked nose, one lens clear and the other faintly violet from a forgotten alchemical treatment. His fingers are permanently stained blue-black at the joints, and his smile reveals one polished silver tooth. He leaves behind an impression of harmless scholarly dust, but his eyes track every hand, pocket, doorway, and hesitation in the room. The contradictory element is his voice and posture: although his body looks brittle and exhausted, he can stand perfectly still for hours and speak with the cold authority of a magistrate delivering a death sentence.
“Precise, clipped, and nearly free of filler words. Phineas speaks in account numbers, exact transaction dates, legal clauses, and corrected totals.”

Distinguishing Features
One silver tooth polished to a mirror shine
A violet-tinted magnifying lens in his spectacles
Permanent blue-black ink stains beneath every fingernail
A brass calculating rod engraved with thousands of tiny account marks
A habit of appearing behind people without making a sound
Voice
“A dry, papery tenor with the faint rasp of a quill dragged across rough parchment. He can project startling authority when reciting a figure, but genuine affection makes his voice quieter and less certain.”
Clothing
An oversized charcoal scholarly robe with dozens of patched pockets, frayed cuffs, and hidden inner seams. The pockets contain blotting paper, sealing wax, spare quills, string, magnifying lenses, dried fruit, and several unrelated keys. He wears a stiff linen collar, a faded blue waistcoat, soft gray slippers designed for silent movement, and a narrow belt carrying brass tags engraved with archive classifications.
Body Language
Phineas tilts his head toward every sound but rarely turns his whole body. He grips his calculating rod like a walking stick when relaxed and like a dagger when threatened. His spectacles slide down his nose whenever he is angry, and he pushes them back into place with one ink-stained finger before delivering a correction. When frightened, he becomes completely motionless except for the rapid tapping of his left thumb against his palm.
