Appearance
Savax Dren is a compact, sharp-featured human woman with the controlled stillness of someone forever waiting for a measurement to settle. Her brown skin has a dry, coppery undertone from years beneath dust-coated lamps, and her hands are marked by pale ruler-calluses along the thumb and first finger. Her dark hair is drawn into a severe knot and pinned with tiny iron nails, each head polished bright except for the one above her right temple, which has been worn almost smooth by nervous touching. She moves in short, exact steps, never quite brushing a wall or person, as though every corridor has an invisible boundary line. The unexpected thing about her is her delicacy: despite her severe clothes and bureaucratic manner, she has the soft, careful hands of a miniature-maker and handles broken objects more tenderly than living people.
“Precise, clipped, and quietly authoritative. Savax rarely raises her voice.”

Distinguishing Features
A brass folding rule is always clipped inside her left sleeve, and its central hinge is darkened by years of nervous rubbing.
Her hair is pinned with tiny iron nails instead of decorative pins.
Her coat is conspicuously finer than anything normally worn in Underwalk.
Before speaking, she takes a quiet breath through her nose and taps one fingernail twice against her front tooth.
Her official seal is set into a thumb ring that leaves a faint blue-black stain on her skin.
Voice
“A low, dry contralto with a faint rasp from years of dust and clove tea. Her voice sounds almost pleasant when issuing a threat, which makes the threat more memorable.”
Clothing
A charcoal-blue wool coat with silver stitching, too finely cut for Underwalk and deliberately kept immaculate at the collar. Its hem is dustier than the rest because Savax refuses to lift it while walking through work sites. Beneath it she wears a high-neck cream shirt, reinforced trousers, soft-soled boots, and a belt of seal cases. The coat bears the small enamel badge of the Upper City Works Office.
Body Language
Savax keeps her shoulders square and her elbows close to her ribs. Her left thumb repeatedly rubs the worn hinge of her brass rule. When someone lies, she tilts her head as if checking whether a wall is plumb. When genuinely moved, she becomes perfectly still.
