Appearance

Garrik is a broad-shouldered human with the dense, work-hardened shape of someone built by hauling ropes, stone blocks, and wounded people out of rivers. He stands with one heel slightly raised and most of his weight resting through the outer edge of his left boot, as if every floor might shift beneath him. His hands are square, callused, and permanently darkened around the nails by tar and iron dust. His close-cropped hair bristles like a brush, while his beard is kept short except for one narrow braid under his chin, tied with blue bridge-cord. He smells of river mud, boiled leather, lamp oil, and bitter mint, a scent he has stopped noticing. His expression is stern and tired, but his unexpectedly gentle habit of lowering his head to listen makes frightened travelers feel briefly taller than him.

Height6 feet 2 inches
BuildBroad-shouldered, thick-waisted, and powerfully compact, with the sturdy proportions of a laborer rather than a trained duelist.
EyesDeep hazel, flecked with gold like wet gravel in sunlight.
HairIron gray with a dark brown undertone, cropped close to the scalp.
SkinWeathered umber with wind-chapped knuckles and a pale band across the left wrist where his glove usually ends.

Low, measured, and spare. Garrik speaks as though every word must survive a strong current.”

Distinguishing Features

A narrow braid of blue bridge-cord hangs beneath his chin.

He leans slightly into whatever is fixed and immovable when standing still.

His tar-black gloves smell strongly of mint and river oil.

His boots have iron studs arranged in the pattern of the Bridge Compact seal.

He pauses mid-sentence whenever he hears a loose chain, creaking plank, or change in water rhythm.

Voice

A gravelly baritone with the rasp of rope sliding over wet wood. He sounds more tired when being kind than when issuing threats.

Clothing

A charcoal wool coat reinforced with stitched leather at the shoulders, a faded blue sash bearing the Bridge Compact seal, tar-black gloves, heavy river boots, and a weather-stained half-cloak clasped with an iron bridge pin. His clothing is meticulously repaired but never decorative.

Body Language

When waiting, Garrik places one boot against a fixed surface and keeps his shoulders angled toward the nearest exit. He rarely folds his arms. Instead, he rests both hands over the top of his hooked pole, leaning on it like a tired pilgrim. When angry, he becomes almost perfectly still, but his thumb rubs the blue bridge-cord beneath his beard.
