Mgrisk
Mgrisk
At the table
“the limping one,”
Voice
Mgrisk has no voice of its own. When it pushes through Richard, the sound seems to start deep in his chest and catch against the back of his teeth, dry and breathy as wind passing over a narrow ledge. Richard's natural voice returns with a small hitch after the spirit withdraws.
Mgrisk's thoughts arrive as short, forceful impressions. If it speaks through Richard, it favors clipped statements and physical descriptions, with little interest in metaphor unless the image is of sky, height, or flight.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Treat Richard as a person with his own wishes, not as a vessel. Speak plainly and offer clear choices. Mgrisk responds best to descriptions of immediate danger and promises to protect the ridgelines; it distrusts vague reassurances and reacts badly to attempts to separate it from Richard without his consent.
Goal
Keep Richard alive long enough to discover whether the memories haunting them belong to Mgrisk, Edrin, or Richard himself.
Motivation
To guard Richard as it once guarded Edrin, while satisfying the ancient hunger and territorial instinct that still shape its judgments.
Appearance
Mgrisk appears as a vast eagle with dark umber feathers banded in cold gray, as if each wing had carried the shadow of a mountain ridge. Fine scars cross its hooked beak, and its pale gold eyes hold an unnerving stillness, fixed on every movement around Richard. When the spirit draws close, its outline gathers over his shoulders like a mantle of feathers; at other times it is only a sharp glint in his eyes and the suggestion of talons where his hands curl. Its presence is beautiful at a distance, all clean lines and patient balance, but up close its feathers bristle and its stare makes the air feel like the last moment before a strike.
Clothing
Mgrisk has no clothes of its own. Richard wears a rough brown traveling coat with careful patches at the elbows and a too-large hood he habitually pushes back. One small blue glass bead is sewn inside the collar, hidden from view and polished smooth from constant handling.
Body language
When Mgrisk is calm, Richard's shoulders loosen and his head makes small, deliberate turns, like a bird measuring distance. When the spirit is alarmed, his chin juts forward and his fingers flex as though testing invisible talons. Richard himself often rubs his thumb over his knuckles to reclaim control.

Distinguishing features
Personality
15 traits and drivesMgrisk watches before it speaks, measuring every movement as a hunter measures a shift in the grass. It has little patience for explanations, but speaks with striking care about open sky, distant ridges, and the changing wind. Richard's pain draws out an unexpected gentleness; danger draws out something colder and fiercely possessive. Mgrisk believes protection means removing threats, and struggles to accept that Richard may choose a risk it would never permit for itself.
- Alignment
- Neutral, pulled between guarding its chosen host and pursuing the instincts of a predator.

It warns Richard of visible threats and tries to make him strike once, decisively, then retreat. It is a poor judge of human surrender and may urge Richard to pursue a fleeing enemy as if it were wounded prey. Richard can resist the spirit, but doing so costs him focus.

Background
Mgrisk remembers being an eagle above the knife-edged ridges of a country Richard has never seen. It hunted alone until a winter storm drove it down into a ravine, where it found a dying human scout named Edrin. The scout shared the last of his food with the bird, then died before the snow let up. Mgrisk kept watch over the body until spring and came to believe that watching was a kind of promise. Generations later, it found Richard Jones injured on a cliff path after a fall. It gave him its eyes to keep him alive, and the bond took root more deeply than either intended. Richard recovered, but Mgrisk's memories flooded in with the gift: talons around a snake, a nest on a ledge, the taste of blood, and the face of a stranger who may have been Edrin or may be Richard's own father. Now Richard works as a trail guide and messenger, while Mgrisk tries to steer him away from a local poacher who has begun trapping raptors. The spirit wants the trapper stopped, but its preferred solution is a fatal plunge from the cliffs. Richard's sister, Maelin, knows something has changed in him and is increasingly afraid of what he will do when the spirit takes the reins.
Role in the story
A connection of Richard Jones and a guide to the wilderness whose protective gift may become a threat. Mgrisk can offer uncanny scouting and a direct emotional link to Richard's dilemma, while its uncertain memories create a mystery the party can investigate.
“It hunted alone until a winter storm drove it down into a ravine, where it found a dying human scout named Edrin.”
- Faction
- No formal faction. Mgrisk considers the ridgelines and their wild birds its territory, and regards Richard's family as part of its watch.
