Varis Rael
Fighter 15, Battle Master; Paladin 4, Oath of the Crown
Varis Rael
Species
Blue Dragonborn
Appearance
Varis is a massively built blue dragonborn whose deep sapphire scales have a dry, granular texture, like stone polished by centuries of desert wind. He moves with a measured forward lean, placing his weight on the balls of his feet as though every corridor might suddenly become a battlefield. His horn crest is thick and braided with copper wire, prayer knots, and faded strips of regimental cloth. His gaze is sharp and calculating, but his expression is often softened by an almost scholarly attentiveness when listening to a soldier. The contradiction is striking: he looks like an executioner carved from a thundercloud, yet he handles fragile objects, such as letters from bereaved families, with exquisite gentleness.
“His voice is a low, dry rumble with the faint crackle of distant thunder. He speaks in concise sentences, pauses before delivering important names, and becomes almost ceremonial when reciting the dead.”

Distinguishing Features
A thick braided horn crest threaded with copper wire, prayer knots, and strips of old regimental cloth.
A blackened left battle gauntlet engraved with hundreds of tiny initials.
A habit of standing perfectly balanced on the balls of his feet, as if the ground itself were unreliable.
A command sword whose blade is plain and practical, while its hilt bears the names of every garrison Varis has defended.
His scales emit faint blue sparks when he is intensely focused or suppressing anger.
Voice
“A restrained baritone that carries across courtyards without effort, with clipped consonants and a soft electrical hiss on certain Draconic words.”
Clothing
Reinforced utilitarian plate armor stained with desert dust and scored by blade and claw. The armor is maintained obsessively but never polished for display. A heavy ceremonial command sword hangs at his waist, its scabbard covered in campaign notches. His left hand wears a blackened battle gauntlet, and a faded blue sash identifies him as First Battle-Master.
Body Language
Varis stands with his hands clasped behind his back and his feet angled toward the nearest exit. He favors no limb, but he habitually turns his left shoulder toward danger, protecting the battle-hardened gauntlet and keeping his sword hand free. In conversation, he leans closer instead of raising his voice. When angry, he stops blinking and begins sorting nearby objects into precise rows.
