Ulfar Vesk
Ulfar Vesk
At the table
Voice
A dry, gravel-edged voice with the carrying projection of a commander used to speaking through dust, wind, and the roar of siege engines. His consonants are hard and deliberate. When he is calm, he leaves space between clauses; under pressure, his breath catches in a double-click and he drives through the sentence without changing its volume.
His speech carries the clipped precision of a career officer and the blunt vocabulary of someone raised around quarry crews. He sets each sentence down like a block of stone, with a faint rasp from old dust and years of shouting orders over siege engines. He pauses before names, giving them unusual weight. When rattled, the dry double-click in his breathing interrupts his words, but he neither lowers his voice nor disguises the break.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Begin with a concrete offer that solves an immediate problem, then explain the price without disguise. Ulfar respects direct questions and competent work, but treats attempts to embarrass him in public as challenges to his authority. He may allow enemies to leave if their departure serves a wider plan. The hidden wooden bird and the story of the pass are the few subjects that can make him hesitate.
Goal
Unite the fractured realms under a single rune-bound law, then discover a way to preserve his mind without consuming another person's life.
Motivation
He believes that a fractured land creates endless preventable graves. Order, in his view, is worth the personal cost, but he is no longer certain whether he is preserving his people or merely preserving himself.
Appearance
Ulfar is nearly seven feet tall, with an immense, compactly muscled frame that still moves with the deliberate economy of a veteran laborer. His dark plate is built from overlapping slabs, each chased with dense, precise runes; the edges are dulled from years of striking stone and steel. Under the helmet, his face is broad and deeply lined, with a close-cropped iron-gray beard and a crown of thinning hair. His eyes glow a steady furnace-amber when the runes wake. He breathes through his nose in slow, measured pulls, but when unsettled his breath catches in a dry double-click. Unexpectedly, he keeps a tiny, carefully repaired wooden bird tucked into a breastplate compartment, its painted beak worn almost bare from his thumb.
Clothing
Heavy, blackened plate armor fitted over a dark wool gambeson, with a high gorget and a long, ash-gray mantle clasped at the right shoulder. The armor bears hundreds of individually cut runes, some filled with dull gold and others glowing faintly from within. He wears no crown; a narrow band of rune-marked iron is riveted to the brow of his helmet.
Body language
He stands with his weight evenly distributed, like a pillar braced against a storm. His gauntlets rarely gesture; when they do, each movement feels like a ruling. He turns his whole torso rather than merely his head, and the armor answers with a low scrape of interlocking plates. When rattled, he goes rigid and his breath makes a small, involuntary double-click.

Personality
13 traits and drivesUlfar is controlled but not cold: he has genuine tenderness for ordinary people, yet believes their safety justifies ruling them without consent. Possessions
Background
Ulfar was born to a family of quarry workers in a border province, where he learned to read stone by its cracks before he learned letters. As a young officer, he kept a fortress pass open during a winter siege by ordering the evacuation of its surrounding villages, then held the pass long enough for the refugees to escape. The choice saved thousands and left his sister, Sarka, among the dead when the retreat collapsed. He later discovered the old runes beneath the fortress were not merely protective marks but instructions for binding life to stone. In middle age, with his body failing and his kingdom splintering, he used the script to extend his life and gathered a court around the promise of unity through law. His former apprentice, Tömür, now works to decipher the runes and believes Ulfar has misunderstood the final inscription. Ulfar still searches for Sarka's remains, though he claims the search is only about recovering a lost royal seal.
Role in the story
The campaign's Big Bad Evil Guy: a formidable ruler whose brutal project grows from a sincere fear of civil collapse. He is not seeking destruction for its own sake. He intends to end war by making every realm answer to him, and the life-binding runes may require a successor's life to complete his reign.
“The choice saved thousands and left his sister, Sarka, among the dead when the retreat collapsed.”
- Faction
- Sovereign of the Rune Court, a crown-centered regime built from conquered border territories and bound by rune-law.
