Laska Kettig
Druid
Laska Kettig
Species
Tortle, custom ancestry
Appearance
Laska is a squat, broad-shelled tortle whose movements are unexpectedly quick. She walks with a rolling, deliberate gait, then suddenly darts sideways with the sharp efficiency of a water beetle. Her shell is layered in dark olive plates, each ridge softened by moss, saddle soap, and years of handling. Tiny pale mushrooms grow from a crack near her left shoulder, and she trims them carefully rather than removing them. Her jaw is heavy and expressive, with blunt, pebble-colored teeth visible whenever she chews or laughs. She eats almost constantly, even during conversation, crunching cattail roots, dried insects, or sugared ginger. Her unexpected contradiction is that she looks damp, earthy, and half-feral, yet keeps her tools polished and her spectacles wrapped in a silk handkerchief. Within a minute of meeting her, most people notice that her breathing is nearly silent when calm, but becomes a rapid, whistling rasp when she is frightened or angry.
“Her voice is low, dry, and unexpectedly musical, with clipped frontier phrasing and occasional hard consonants. She speaks slowly when calm, leaving long pauses for insects, wind, or other people to fill.”

Distinguishing Features
A living patch of pale shelf mushrooms grows from a crack in her shell and changes shape with the weather.
Her broad jaw and blunt teeth are clearly visible because she chews during nearly every conversation.
She wears tiny brass tags on her hat, each stamped with the name of a patient she failed to save.
Her shell carries a faded blue railroad line painted across it, which she has repeatedly tried to scrub away.
Her calm breathing is almost inaudible, but fear makes it whistle through her nose like a kettle beginning to boil.
Voice
“A gravelly contralto with a faint reedlike whistle on the inhale when she is tense”
Clothing
A faded rust-red duster cut around her shell, patched canvas trousers, a cream waistcoat full of herb packets, mud-stained gaiters, and a broad leather satchel. Her hat is a battered black cavalry hat pinned with a heron feather and a brass railroad token.
Body Language
Laska keeps her chin tucked and her shell angled toward strangers, presenting herself as smaller and less interested than she really is. Her hands are always occupied with a leaf, needle, vial, or bit of twine. When amused, she opens her mouth in a wide, toothy grin. When rattled, her nostrils flare, her breath whistles, and her head retracts a fraction into her shell before she forces herself upright again.
