Civilian Surveyor

Thabit ibn-Suleiman

0·Male·Medium
Lawful neutral, with an increasingly inconvenient conscience

Species

Human

Appearance

Thabit is a narrow, weather-hardened man whose movements are economical to the point of seeming mechanical. He walks with a slight forward lean, as if the world is always a slope he intends to measure before descending it. His hands are callused, ink-stained, and dotted with tiny burns from soldering tools. A silver scar cuts through his left eyebrow and continues into his temple, while his right thumb is permanently bent from an old pulley accident. His robes hang in precise layers, but the hems are repeatedly patched with bright green thread. He smells faintly of lamp oil, dust, bitter tea, and rain-soaked rope. The unexpected contradiction is his smile, which is warm, sudden, and almost boyish, appearing whenever someone makes an especially elegant mistake.

Height5 feet 8 inches
BuildLean and wiry, with the compact strength of someone accustomed to climbing scaffolds, hauling instrument cases, and walking long distances under an unforgiving sun
EyesDark hazel with amber flecks, usually narrowed in concentration and startlingly gentle when he thinks nobody is watching
HairBlack gone heavily gray at the temples, cut short with a single stubborn lock that always falls over his forehead
SkinWarm brown, weathered across the cheeks and nose by years of sun, dust, and reflected river glare

His speech is measured, dry, and carefully economical. He pauses before answering as though sorting words into useful and decorative categories.”

Distinguishing Features

A silver scar runs from his left eyebrow to his temple.

His right thumb is permanently bent and clicks softly when he grips a tool.

He wears a brass seal with one corner deliberately filed away.

Bright green stitching repairs nearly every hem and pocket in his clothing.

His shadow appears to pause for a heartbeat whenever he stops moving.

Voice

A low, dry baritone with a faint rasp, like sand sliding across ceramic. He speaks softly enough that people must lean closer, which he considers an efficient way to discourage interruptions.

Clothing

A sand-colored work robe reinforced with leather panels at the elbows and knees, a deep green sash bearing the Compact's brass seal, soft wrapped boots, a sleeveless indigo vest crowded with pockets, and a hooded traveling cloak lined with old survey maps. His belt carries calipers, chalk, cords, folding rulers, a brass plumb bob, and three differently sized notebooks.

Body Language

Thabit keeps his elbows close, his fingers folded around a pencil or measuring cord. When irritated, he taps twice against his wrist as though checking an invisible clock. He rarely points at people, preferring to indicate objects or routes. Genuine affection makes him stand unusually still.
