Tenala Ashbrook
Warden of the Wood
Tenala Ashbrook
Species
Human
Appearance
Tenala has a weathered, capable presence that seems more suited to a crowded wayhouse than a heroic legend. Her skin is sun-browned across the hands and forehead, while the rest of her complexion remains a muted warm brown from years spent under layered clothing and forest shade. Her dark hair is cut to the jaw and usually tucked behind one ear, but loose strands collect around her mouth whenever she works over a map. She moves with economical precision, turning her whole body before changing direction and placing each foot as if testing the floor for hidden weakness. Her most noticeable feature is not a wound but her breathing: before speaking, she takes a quiet inward breath through her nose, holds it for half a heartbeat, and then answers in an even voice. When rattled, that pause disappears and her words come out in quick, clipped bursts. The unexpected contradiction is that her hands are rough and permanently stained with ink, yet she handles every paper, bowl, and borrowed belonging with almost ceremonial delicacy.
“Measured and plainly worded, with a quiet inhale before most answers. Tenala rarely raises her voice.”

Distinguishing Features
Her breathing and speech begin with a noticeable measured pause, but become rapid and clipped when she is rattled.
Her fingertips are permanently marked with charcoal and blue-black ledger ink.
She wears a ring of small wooden tally tokens on her belt, each carved with a different symbol for food, shelter, transport, healing, or messages.
Her left boot has been resoled with pale green leather that is visibly newer than the rest of her clothing.
She can identify several common Greenheart paths by the sound of their foot traffic before seeing who is approaching.
Voice
“Low and clear, with a faint rasp from years of speaking over rain, kitchens, and crowded wayhouses. Her voice is reassuring when she is rested, dryly amused when she feels safe, and unnervingly gentle when someone has lied about putting a vulnerable person at risk.”
Clothing
A faded green wool coat with reinforced elbows, a russet undershirt, durable brown trousers, and soft-soled boots suited to wet forest paths. Her belt carries a ring of wooden tally tokens, a charcoal case, a folding knife, and a small brass whistle. A patched gray scarf is wrapped twice around her neck, even indoors, because she dislikes drafts.
Body Language
Tenala leans slightly toward people who are speaking softly and slightly away from people who are shouting. She rests two fingers on the edge of a table when thinking, taps once before making a decision, and keeps her shoulders loose even when her jaw tightens. If a conversation turns threatening, she stops moving entirely except for the careful rise and fall of her breath.
