Voice

A dry, weathered voice with a slight rasp from salt air and years of shouting over surf. Their words have the clipped rhythm of someone accustomed to giving directions that must be heard the first time. When angry, they become faster and more emphatic, not softer.

Aziron speaks in compact, practical sentences shaped by years of calling directions over wind and water. They mark uncertainty plainly, distinguish what they saw from what they infer, and use island weather and ground as everyday comparisons.

Speech patterns

Distinguishes evidence from interpretation with phrases such as "I saw" and "I suspect."
Uses short, concrete directions when danger is immediate.
Answers confident claims with a question about what was actually observed.
Calls an uncertain theory a possibility, never a revelation.

How to play them

Aziron offers specific observations and practical guidance, then invites the party to compare interpretations. They disclose their sibling's disappearance if the party treats uncertainty honestly or risks repeating the old survey. They will not endorse a theory about the Nova's Heart without evidence.

Goal

Help the party interpret what the compass and newly exposed shard actually show, keep them safe on the island, and investigate whether either clue relates to Seki without claiming certainty about the Nova's Heart.

Motivation

To protect travelers without turning uncertainty into a false promise, and to discover what happened to Seki.

Secret · GM only

Appearance

A compact, weather-shaped person who stands with their weight pitched slightly forward, as if always braced for a deck to tilt. Their skin is sun-browned and salt-rough, with fine pale lines at the wrists where years of wet cuffs have rubbed. Their close-cropped hair is mostly iron gray, but they maintain a ruler-straight part with almost fussy care. A narrow braid of blue thread is worked into one temple, an unexpected scrap of meticulous decoration on an otherwise practical guide. They move with short, sure steps and test unfamiliar ground with the end of a walking stick before trusting it. Their clothes are patched and plain, but every patch is aligned with exacting neatness; people tend to remember the blue thread and the unnerving precision of their repairs.

Clothing

A salt-faded oilskin coat with carefully squared patches, layered wool beneath it, and a broad belt holding a compass case and folded route notes. One glove is newer than the other; both are meticulously cleaned. A small blue-thread braid at the temple is the one flourish they refuse to explain.

Body language

Angles their body toward the nearest safe path, even during conversation. When uncertain, they tap the walking stick twice against the ground and watch what shifts. They look directly at people when correcting them, but glance away toward the terrain when describing something they cannot prove.

Personality

13 traits and drives

Aziron is cautious about conclusions but bold about getting people out of immediate danger. They can be warm and wry around familiar fishers, yet clipped and exacting with strangers who treat the island as a puzzle to conquer. When calm, they make room for competing theories; when frightened, they become controlling and give orders before explaining why.

Alignment
Neutral good

Quirks

Taps the walking stick twice before stepping onto ground they have not tested.
Uses a pinch of salt to mark an uncertain point on a map, then wipes it away when the uncertainty is resolved.
Turns Seki's tide whistle exactly one quarter turn whenever someone mentions fog.
Straightens crooked patches on other people's clothing while listening to them.

Habits

Checks wind, tide, and ground before agreeing to lead anyone anywhere.
Separates firsthand observation from guesswork whenever discussing the compass or shard.
Keeps count of the party by quietly touching the blue thread at their temple.
Becomes brisk and practical when frightened, then admits what unsettled them once everyone is safe.

Their insistence on careful evidence can become paralyzing when a quick decision is needed.
They conceal personal grief behind practical instructions.
They sometimes mistake refusing to speculate for being fair to everyone involved.

Fears · 3

Leading someone into the same fogbound confusion that took Seki.
Mistaking a compelling pattern for proof.
Discovering that Seki survived and chose not to return.

Wants and needs · 4

Wants the party to survive the island and handle the shard carefully.
Needs to learn whether the sound they heard after Seki's disappearance was real.
Wants honest discussion of the compass without anyone mistaking a theory for a fact.
Needs allies who can challenge their caution without dismissing it.

Combat

AC 11 · HP 9 · 30 ft.

Aziron avoids direct combat, using terrain, retreat routes, and clear warnings to protect the party. If cornered, they jab with their walking stick, then disengage toward cover. These are custom, modest statistics for a level 0 guide, not a class-based adventurer build.

Custom feature. Compass Witness. Aziron can identify the direction in which the compass needle settles and describe its changes, but cannot determine what the compass points toward or why.
Custom feature. Shard Listener. When the newly exposed shard is brought within arm's reach, Aziron can describe its audible and tactile qualities. This grants no certainty about the Nova's Heart.

Actions

Walking-Stick Jab. Melee Weapon Attack: to hit, reach 5 ft. Hit: 3 () bludgeoning damage. Aziron would rather use this to make space than to injure someone.
Island Guidance. Aziron points out a visible route, hazard, or landmark, offering practical directions based on firsthand knowledge of the island. They do not claim the route is safe.

Reactions

Custom feature: Guide's Warning. When an ally within 5 feet is targeted by an attack, Aziron can use their reaction to warn them and help them shift behind nearby cover. The ally gains a bonus to AC against that attack if cover is available.

Services they sell

Guides travelers through familiar island routes, subject to weather and tide.
Explains local landmarks, currents, and signs of shifting ground.
Helps compare observations of the compass and shard without declaring what they ultimately signify.

Rewards they can give

Reliable firsthand guidance across familiar parts of the Isle of Whispers.
Access to Aziron's field notes, including routes and observed compass behavior.
Aziron's trust, if the party respects the difference between evidence and theory.

Equipment

  • Walking stick (melee weapon)A stout, plain stick used for testing ground and, if necessary, defending themself.
  • Unfamiliar compass (navigation tool)A weathered navigational instrument whose needle reacts to the island's unusual conditions. Aziron reports its behavior without claiming to know its ultimate meaning.
  • Route notes (personal item)Folded field notes marked with routes, tide observations, and careful distinctions between fact and conjecture.
  • Tide whistle (keepsake)A small whistle kept as a reminder of Seki; Aziron does not use it as a signal.

Background

Aziron grew up hauling tide nets with their mother and learned the Isle of Whispers by the smell of its rocks, the pull of its currents, and the way gulls avoided certain coves. In youth, they guided a survey crew inland to a spring they believed they knew well. A sudden fog and a misleading echo split the crew; their younger sibling, Seki, vanished in the confusion. Aziron has never learned whether Seki drowned, escaped, or was taken by something on the island. Afterward, they stopped treating local knowledge as certainty and began marking every map with what was observed, what was inferred, and what remained unknown. They now work as a witness and guide, helping visitors read signs without pretending those signs tell the whole story. Their current trouble is that the exposed shard has revived old arguments about the compass and drawn reckless treasure-seekers toward the island. Aziron wants to keep the party alive while finding out whether the shard's arrival connects to Seki's disappearance.

Role in the story

Witness and guide in Session 9: Isle of Whispers. Aziron helps the party interpret the compass and newly exposed shard by describing observable behavior, local knowledge, and plausible but explicitly uncertain explanations. They never claim certainty about the Nova's Heart.

From their background
Faction
Independent island guide; trusted by some local fishers, but not formally affiliated with any organization.

Known connections

Seki, their younger sibling, disappeared during a fogbound survey years ago; Aziron still carries Seki's tide whistle.
Aziron trades weather observations with a fisher called Tsum, who thinks the guide's caution is useful but excessive.
A retired surveyor named Grast once accused Aziron of abandoning the crew during the fog. Aziron disputes the accusation but has never confronted Grast in person.
