The Man in the Yellow Mask
The Man in the Yellow Mask
At the table
Voice
A dry, even rasp, as if shaped by years of calling over rain and wagon wheels. He clips routine instructions, but articulates every condition in a bargain with deliberate precision. When angry, he speaks faster and more insistently rather than lowering his voice.
His voice has the dry, even rasp of someone accustomed to calling over rain and wagon wheels. He clips the ends of practical instructions, but gives every condition in a bargain its full, careful weight. His island Common carries old woodland terms and the occasional swallowed consonant from a language no living local recognizes. When angered, he does not soften or hush; he speaks more quickly, like a shopkeeper reciting the exact measure of a debt.
Speech patterns
How to play them
Meet weary travelers with a useful gift and a clear, modest offer. Make the terms explicit and allow time to consider. He does not threaten those who refuse, but he remembers anyone who accepts a gift and gives a promise. He prefers to teach oathbreakers what their words cost rather than kill them.
Goal
Preserve the old woodland routes long enough to find Uljaa and offer her a chance to reclaim her face without demanding a promise in return.
Motivation
He wants to make bargains that keep people alive without turning every kindness into a trap, though he does not know how to do that without changing the old rules.
Appearance
A tall, long-limbed merchant stands as if the road were a narrow deck shifting beneath him. His yellow mask is lacquered to a dry, eggshell sheen, with a neat, welcoming smile that never changes when he speaks. The coat beneath it is a patchwork of faded road cloth, carefully darned at the elbows with thread too bright to match. One cuff is repeatedly brushed clean, though the rest of him carries the damp smell of leaf mold and old rain. His teeth are small and square, packed close together; when he eats, he bites with the measured care of someone testing a coin. His laugh shows no teeth at all. He moves without rustling the ferns, then turns with the brisk certainty of a shopkeeper who has heard a customer hesitate.
Clothing
A mud-dark traveling coat repaired with squares of mismatched cloth, a stiff yellow waistcoat, and boots polished only at the toes. The coat's left cuff is scrubbed and brushed obsessively clean. A cracked leather pack hangs from one shoulder, packed with useful small goods.
Body language
He presents gifts with both hands, palms upward, like a host setting down a meal. His head tilts toward whoever is speaking, but his shoulders remain square to the nearest path out. When someone considers an oath, he taps one finger against the cane's yellow handle. He never points; he turns his whole body toward what he means.

Combat
AC 19 · HP 285 · 30 ft.He avoids a fair fight. He begins with control spells and Mask-Splinter Ray, uses misty step or dimension door to keep distance, and attacks oathbreakers with Show the Face Beneath. He uses terrain and illusions to separate enemies, then offers a way out that costs them a promise. If badly pressed, he spends legendary resistance to avoid incapacitation and retreats through a wooded route.

Background
The oldest stories say he was once a mortal peddler who walked the island roads with a pack of needles, salt, and paper charms. In truth, he was a fey emissary sent to learn what mortals would trade when they were frightened and far from home. He took the shape of a traveling merchant and learned that a promise could be more valuable than any coin. Centuries ago, a winter storm trapped him and a band of travelers in a hollow beneath a fallen tree. A young guide named Uljaa swore to lead the others out if he gave them a dry path. He did, but the guide broke her vow and abandoned a wounded companion. When he revealed his true face, the guide's face vanished. The others fled, and he was left with the knowledge that his gifts could save people and his bargains could ruin them. He has since become a fixture of Whym's winding woods, appearing to the lost with precisely what they need. He still searches for Uljaa, now an old woman living under another name, because he wants her to choose freely whether to reclaim her face. He also has an uneasy friendship with a ferryman named Oru, who brings him news from the coast and refuses to make promises. The island's new road cutters have begun felling trees that mark his paths, and each vanished landmark makes his bargains harder to keep.
Role in the story
A folkloric benefactor and dangerous test of the party's relationship with promises. He can rescue travelers, provide vital supplies, or become a haunting pursuer if someone knowingly breaks a bargain. His search for Uljaa gives the party a chance to resolve his oldest grievance without simply defeating him.
