Mara Nine-Forms
Shifters
Mara Nine-Forms
Species
Human, altered by prolonged exposure to borrowed creature traits
Appearance
Mara is tall and weathered, with the poised stillness of a heron waiting beside a river. Her body is lean rather than muscular, but every movement seems to contain a second movement beneath it: shoulders ripple like a cat preparing to spring, fingers flex with the neat precision of a crab, and her head sometimes tilts at an owl's impossible angle. Her skin is warm brown and marked by fine silver scars that branch across her ribs and collarbones like frost on glass. One side of her face is severe and human, while the other bears a faint velvet texture and a mobile nostril reminiscent of an elephant's trunk. The contradiction is unsettling: despite her legendary reputation as a creature-borrowing guardian, she always smells faintly of fresh bread and woodsmoke. People remember her not as frightening, but as something ancient trying very hard to be kind.
“Low, precise, and quietly textured, with occasional clicks, trills, whistles, or breathy hisses woven into ordinary words. She speaks slowly when assessing danger and rapidly when discussing animals.”

Distinguishing Features
Silver branching scars across her ribs and collarbones.
A faint velvet texture and mobile nostril on the right side of her face.
Nine tiny tokens woven into her hair, each representing a creature that changed her life.
A red scarf with one corner stiff from old blood.
Her shadow occasionally shows horns, wings, or a long tail half a second after she moves.
Voice
“A low contralto with a dry rasp, like reeds brushing against a window at night. When she is furious, the voice becomes unnervingly calm and almost musical.”
Clothing
A sleeveless charcoal coat made from layered wool, oilskin, and shed serpent scales, fastened with nine mismatched clasps. She wears moss-colored trousers, soft leather boots with split soles, a red scarf belonging to her missing brother, and a belt hung with tiny bone, shell, and feather tokens. Her left glove has fingers of unequal lengths so she can feel subtle changes in air pressure.
Body Language
Mara rarely stands still in a fully human posture. Her weight shifts from the balls of her feet to her heels, her shoulders angle toward every sound, and her hands form small, unconscious gestures that resemble paws, talons, or antennae. When angry, she becomes perfectly motionless. When frightened, she smiles.
