Borbála is a vibrant young woman with olive skin, long red hair that falls in heavy, riverlike waves to her hips, and bright golden eyes that seem to catch light before it reaches them. Her movements are fluid until danger appears, when she becomes startlingly still, like a flame deprived of air. She smells unmistakably of orange peel, hot copper, and woodsmoke, a scent she insists comes from her perfume despite never wearing any. Her elegant features and luminous presence suggest a court magician, but her fingernails are permanently darkened by soot and her boots are scuffed like a traveler’s.
