The Headmistress's Bell
You find a narrow school antechamber tucked between two busy city streets, its old brick walls smelling of rain, chalk dust, and faintly sweet ink. Sunlight from a high window falls across three empty grooves in a polished brass rail, marked FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD. Three wooden subject tiles rest on a nearby desk. Above them hangs a brass bell; whenever a tile is moved, its clapper gives a tiny anticipatory twitch, and the slate beside it seems freshly wiped.
