For a lower-threat table, reduce the failure pulse to 1d6 necrotic damage or make it purely cosmetic. For a more dangerous level 7 expedition, increase it to 3d6 and have the pulse alert a nearby cavern creature, while keeping the wall's reset and passage available.
Let players reason from the written clues before calling for checks; checks clarify evidence rather than replace the puzzle. Treat a sensible demonstration of the sequence as success, even if players use substitutes. On a wrong attempt, describe the glow moving in the wrong direction before the pulse so the danger is telegraphed.
