The round temple chamber smells of wet stone and extinguished incense. Four bronze slots run along a waist-high altar toward a sealed inner door, and four carved tokens rest in a tray beneath an inscription. Blue light pools around the Moon token while a faint amber glow flickers beneath Flame. Each slot bears a clear number, and a fine layer of dust trembles whenever someone touches the altar, as if the stone is listening.
You step into a circular temple chamber where wet stone and old incense scent the air. Four numbered bronze slots lead toward a sealed door. Four carved tokens sit in a tray beneath an inscription, and dim light stirs inside the altar as you approach.
The inscription is legible without a check. Let the players handle the tokens and discuss the clues freely. Investigation can reveal that the slots are read left to right; Arcana can explain the light feedback. Do not require checks to solve the logic.
Give the group a few minutes to arrange the clues. If discussion stalls, offer tier 1, then tier 2 after another attempt, and tier 3 when they are clearly stuck. A wrong sequence produces a brief, harmless pulse before escalating any consequence.

The tokens, four numbered slots, and inscription are visible upon entering. Examination reveals that the slots are meant to be filled in order, and the door's central sunburst brightens whenever a clue is correctly satisfied.
Place the four signs in the numbered slots, from the threshold toward the inner door.
Use each sign once. The slots are numbered 1 through 4.
The players read the inscription and place the four tokens into the numbered slots from left to right, or clearly speak the sequence while touching the matching carvings. The clues establish that Rain comes before Moon, Moon comes before Sun, and Flame is immediately after Rain. A correct partial relationship makes the relevant token pair glow steadily; a contradiction makes the affected slot briefly go dark. The altar resets after an incorrect full sequence, so the players can try again. No check is needed to solve or operate the puzzle; checks can clarify the mechanism, while forcing it triggers the failure consequence.
The puzzle activates when a creature places a token in any slot or touches the inscribed altar while holding one of the tokens.
| DC | Check | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Investigation | Notice that the four slots are numbered from left to right and that the clue about the paired signs means consecutive positions. |
| 13 | Religion | Recall that temple ceremonies conventionally name the rain before the moon and the moon before the sun, supporting the clues without replacing them. |
| 13 | Arcana | Understand the mechanism's feedback: a token that fits a clue briefly glows, while a contradiction makes its slot go dark. |

The four tokens glow in sequence, Rain's slot filling with blue light and Flame's with amber. The light passes through Moon and Sun, and the inner door opens with a deep stone sigh. The altar's ward quiets, and the archive beyond is accessible.
The altar releases a harmless but startling pulse of force and a cloud of dust. Each creature within 10 feet makes a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, taking 1d6 thunder damage on a failure or no damage on a success. The tokens return to the tray, the slots reset, and the door remains shut. After three failed attempts, the temple's ward awakens and sends a distant warning chime through the complex, alerting nearby guardians but not blocking further attempts.
The astronomer-priestess Ilyra built the Sequence of the Returning Flame to protect a sanctuary archive from looters while allowing temple keepers to enter without a key. She encoded the entry order in a short set of astronomical and ritual clues, expecting initiates to reason together rather than rely on strength. After the temple was abandoned, the mechanism remained active, still recognizing the old ceremonial sequence.
For a lower-pressure group, remove the damage from the first failure pulse and have the slots reset with a soft chime. For a more challenging group, keep the same puzzle but let the warning chime summon a guardian after the third failed attempt. The reasoning itself remains unchanged for level 4.
Treat this as a reasoning challenge, not a test of whether players make the exact checks. Give the inscription as written and allow experimentation. Checks provide clarity or context, not the answer. Encourage players to state their reasoning and make the feedback informative without solving the whole sequence for them.
