The Opening

Three caravans have vanished along the western edge of the Great Sand Sea, and the latest sandstorm uncovered a black tower that appears on no surviving map. Dr. Samira Vale is offering coin, salvage rights, and protection to anyone willing to find the lost city of Qasr-Khaluun before the Brass Horizon Company reaches it. She warns that the storm is moving against the wind and that someone inside it has been calling her by name.

Set the Scene

The adventure begins in Dustmere, a rail-and-caravan settlement built around a dry cistern and an old frontier telegraph station. Dr. Samira Vale presents a fragment of black stone etched with geometric lines that rearrange whenever it is exposed to moonlight. Elias Rook identifies the lines as a route that only appears during a backward-moving sandstorm. Before the party can depart, Nadir ibn Orren stumbles into town carrying a brass tile from Qasr-Khaluun and insists that the city is already awake.

Stakes

If the party fails, the Returning Wind completes its cycle and begins rewriting the western Great Sand Sea around Qasr-Khaluun. Trade routes vanish, caravans become trapped in repeating journeys, and the Brass Horizon Company gains access to a device capable of predicting or manipulating desert weather. If the party succeeds, they determine the future of the lost city and may change the balance of power across the frontier.

Ticking Clock·The Returning Wind completes its current seven-day cycle when the seventh dawn rises after the black tower first appears. Each major delay advances the cycle. At the end of the cycle, Qasr-Khaluun shifts several miles beneath the dunes and the route must be rediscovered.

Background Lore

For centuries, the western edge of the Great Sand Sea has swallowed caravans, watchtowers, and entire dynasties. Beneath the dunes lies Qasr-Khaluun, a lost city built around a black stone observatory whose mirrored domes once tracked the movement of stars, spirits, and something that was never meant to rise from below. Its streets combine sun-baked South American stepped plazas, Middle Eastern arcades, painted tilework, carved stone masks, and brass waterworks. Recent sandstorms have exposed the top of its highest tower, drawing prospectors, scholars, raiders, and a supernatural dust storm that moves against the wind.

What the World Knows

The party is hired to locate Qasr-Khaluun, an ancient lost city buried beneath the western edge of the Great Sand Sea. The city combines stepped plazas, painted tile arcades, carved stone guardian figures, brass waterworks, and a mysterious astronomical observatory. A rival expedition is racing toward the same destination, while unnatural storms threaten to erase the route entirely.
